The town of Creedence, Colorado gets involved in horse rescue in bestseller Jennie Marts' brilliant new series
Scarred and battered loner Zane Taylor has a gift with animals, particularly horses, but he's at a total loss when it comes to knowing how to handle women. Even though he's sworn off love, he can't seem to stay away from Bryn Callahan. He's known for being a horse whisperer, but can't seem to find his voice at all where Bryn is concerned.
Bryn Callahan has a heart for strays, but she is through trying to save damaged men. She vows to only date nice guys, which is a category that does not include Zane Taylor. Too bad he's the only one who sets her pulse racing every time she's around him.
Starting a horse rescue ranch wasn't in Bryn's plan, but try telling that to the assembly of abandoned animals that have found their way to her doorstep. And when a chance encounter with a horse headed for slaughter brings Zane and Bryn together, they find themselves given a chance to save not just the horse, but maybe each other...Β
Excerpt Zane had grown up in Creedence as well. He and Bryn had been a few years apart in school, but he hadnβt paid much attention to her back then.
But she sure had his attention now. Watching her tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear and listening to the sound of her laughter carrying through the diner had his gut doing the funny kind of flips he hadnβt let himself feel in a long time.
And I have no business letting myself feel them now either, he thought as he dug into the warm plate of biscuits and gravy Bryn set in front of him. Not after what happened with Sarah. Heβd loved her, but look how that turned out. Tragedy and pain. Even now, the sound of an ambulance siren still made his chest tighten and his stomach roil. He wasnβt a bet any woman should take.
Bryn topped off the coffees of the two trailer guys as they ate, then leaned her hip against the counter. Her manner suggested cool nonchalance, but Zane knew different as he heard her ask casually, βIs that your horse out there?β
βNot ours,β Flannel Shirt said, his tone boastful and derisive. βBut sheβs in our trailer.β
Bryn eyed them, the first hint of suspicion showing on her face. βWhy do you have someone elseβs horse in your trailer? Who does she belong to?β
βNo one. Not anymore.β
Her brow furrowed in confusion. βI donβt get it, but I noticed she didnβt seem very happy.β
βIβm sure she isnβt,β he answered, shrugging his shoulders. βBut it doesnβt matter. That nag is on her way to βa farm in the country,β if you know what I mean.β He used his fingers to make air quotes.
Brynβs eyes widened as a gasp escaped her lips. βYou mean youβre taking her toβ¦β She obviously couldnβt say the words, and her skin took on a greenish pallor.
Green Hat nodded, and his lips curved into a sly grin. βYep. Weβre what you might call a βwaste disposalβ company.β
The color drained from Brynβs face. βYou canβt be serious.β
βAs a horseβs heart attack.β He talked around the bite of hash browns in his mouth as he elbowed the other man in the ribs and laughed at his own poor joke.
βBut why?β she asked.
βWho knows? And who cares? Not our business to ask. We just collect the horse and the fee. Then itβs our job to drop them off at the glue factory.β
Just as βcasualβ as Bryn had been, Zane kept an eye on the conversation, and he swore he saw the light blink in Brynβs eyes as an idea occurred to her.
βSoooo if youβve already collected the fee for her, what happens if she never makes it to theβ¦β She swallowed. βThe final destination?β
Flannel Shirt shrugged again. βNothing, I guess. Except they have one less horse to slaughter.β
Bryn winced but wasnβt swayed by their obvious attempt to rile her. βSo what if you just let her go? Or what if I took her off your hands? I live on a farm, so from what you said earlier, youβd still be fulfilling your obligation.β
Green Hatβs eyes went dark and predatory. βWhere is this farm? Maybe we could stop by and visit before we leave town.β
A low growl formed in Zaneβs throat, and his knuckles went white around his fork as he considered jabbing the utensil into the dirt bagβs eye.
Flannel Shirt put a hand on his partnerβs arm as he eyed Bryn, working the toothpick from one side of his mouth to the other. βI can see you really want this horseββhe eyed her name tagββBryn. So we might be able to arrange something. Iβm Raleigh, and this hereβs my friend Gator. Why donβt you tell us what you have in mind?β
βNot the same thing he does,β she answered, flashing Gator a disdainful look. She forced her lips back into a smile as she regarded Raleigh. βHow about I cover your breakfast and pack you a lunch for the road as well? Iβll even throw in a couple of slices of pie.β
He let out a scornful laugh. βHow about you do all that and throw in a couple hundred bucks?β
Brynβs shoulders sank. βI donβt have a couple hundred bucks.β She pressed her lips together, then inhaled a deep breath before offering, βBut Iβd give you my car in exchange for letting me have the horse.β
βThe one you just told this whole place is broken down on the side of the road? No thanks.β
βYeah, what are we gonna do with a broken-down car?β Gator chimed in. As casual as she tried to act, they knew they had her. βCouple of guys like us, we work on a cash-only basis.β
βI understand. Iβm just a little low on cash right now.β She glanced around the diner as if mentally counting up her morning tips. βAnd thereβs no way I can make that in tips today. But think about it: you giving me the horse only makes your job easier. That seems like a no-brainer for a couple of smart guys like you.β
These two idiots are the βno-brainers.β Zane held back a smirk as he reached for his wallet to pay his bill. He needed to get out of here before he did something foolishβlike kick these guys out on their greasy butts and let the horse go. Or worse.
Raleigh tapped his finger on the counter, a thin line of grease visible under his nail. βNo oneβs ever offered to buy our load before, but you have a point. If we donβt have to drop off that horse, we can get home a day early. So maybe Iβm feeling generous and willing to make a deal.β
βIβm listening,β Bryn said, crossing her arms protectively over her chest.
βYou cover our breakfast and pack us a lunch, and weβll give you that horse for an even hundred.β
βAnd donβt forget the pie,β Gator threw in.
Bryn chewed her lip, her gaze skimming over the diner patrons once more. Her eyes landed on Zaneβs, and he held them a moment, knowing already what she was going to say.
βDeal,β she said. βJust give me a little time to drum up the cash. Iβll make some calls while I put together your lunch.β
Raleighβs lips curved as his eyes went to the clock above her head. He knew he had a live oneβhe just had to reel in the line. βYouβve got twenty minutes. Or weβre leaving. With the horse.β
Zane rifled through the bills in his wallet. Heβd just gotten paid. In fact, one of his errands that morning was stopping at the bank. Even as he fought it, knowing how stupid the idea was, he knew his deposit was going to end up being a little slim.
Heβd had the biscuits and gravy meal before and knew his bill normally totaled a little over ten dollars, so he usually left fifteen. He sighed as he took two bills from his wallet and slid them under the edge of his plate.
βThanks for breakfast, Bryn,β he told her as he slid off the stool. βIβll check back in later to see if you need a ride home.β
βSee ya, Zane,β she said, then glanced at the bills on the counter, her eyes and her grin widening as she saw the twenty and the crisp hundred-dollar bill sticking out from under his plate.
He turned and walked out of the restaurant, knowing full well he was going to regret that move, but yet, somehow his steps seemed to be as light as his wallet.
