This collection includes some of the common types of horror stories—namely, psychological, gothic, occult, splatter, supernatural, and vampire, but also a number of crime-horror tales. Murder being traditionally crime/noir’s domain, I have poached on that territory based on the reasoning that, while murder is almost always attributed to sex, greed, or revenge (workplace violence has an obvious motive), few kinds of horror terrify as much as that random, motiveless murderer lurking among us. Even spree killers have reasons that make “sense” in their warped psyches. But to comprehend an amoral sadist operating out of a distorted psychopathy to fulfil a fantasy need makes the bogeymen hiding under children’s beds a clichéd trope for a cheap jump-scare. My wish is that the stories speak for themselves.
