Historical

Based on a True Story - Travel - Adventure - Personal Discovery - Historical Insights:

The book contains 115,000 words and is divided into 24 chapters.

The Journal begins in the caves of Matala on the Island of Crete, made famous by Joni Mitchell's song Carey from her Blue album. My cave was three caves down from hers.
The story details my quest to visit the churches of Lalibela in the Gondor region of Northern Ethiopia. I embarked alone on a journey up the Nile River and across the Nubian Desert to Khartoum. I faced unexpected challenges entering Ethiopia from Sudan, finally arriving in Addis Ababa only to be involved with the Mengistu Coup on February 3, 1977 - the beginning of the Red Terror. The political landscape of Eastern Africa was dramatically changing, and I found myself in the heart of those transitions, finally escaping Ethiopia on a dried-up riverbed into Kenya.
This book covers various topics through discussions with individuals I encountered. I have listed just a few below:

  • Experiencing a crippling family tragedy, Marianne immerses herself in the philosophy of Epicurus to discover happiness on the island of Crete.
  • While traveling on the Nile toward Wadia Halfa and the Nubian Desert, Australians Liz and Sue discuss the challenges of being lesbians and women's rights with an Imam from Sudan. The discussion progresses to Human Rights overall.
  • I discovered the home and meaning of Rastafarian.
  • Traveling north to Ethiopia's Gondor region and the source of the Nile, I learn about Ethiopia's Queen of Sheba, her relationship with King Solomon, and the country's possession of the Ark of Covenant.
  • While under arrest in Southern Ethiopia, I became involved in an intense discussion with the military convoy leader about the fragility of democracy.
  • In an altered cross, I smuggled precious stones out of Ethiopia to support the counter-group White Terror against the Red Terror.
