Sandi Kahn Shelton
Pseudonym: Maddie Dawson.
Sandi Kahn Shelton is the author of three funny, poignant, critically acclaimed novels about family, relationships, and the ups and downs of modern-day love. She’s a feature reporter and a former award-winning humor columnist for Working Mother magazine and the author of dozens of articles for women’s magazines—on everything from how to flatten your stomach to how to keep from weeping when you find out at 11 p.m. that your child needs an elephant costume by morning.
Her first novel, What Comes After Crazy, took her 17 years to write because she could only write it between newspaper deadlines, carpool runs, and those rare moments when nobody in her house wanted her to be doing something else or the dog didn’t need to be let out. Since then, she’s gotten the hang of saying “NO,” and has completed two more novels,A Piece of Normal and most recently, Kissing Games of the World, and is at work on a fourth novel. (This she sees as the delightful fulfillment of her early promise to herself to become a writer, made when she was 6 years old and sold a story to the neighbors after her mother refused to give her money for the ice cream truck. “I saw this as my ticket to a life filled with frozen desserts,” she says.)
In addition to being a novelist, she’s a feature reporter for the New Haven Register and teaches creative writing workshops, and writes a blog. She’s married to journalist Jim Shelton, and she’s the mother of three kids, all of whom have worked out pretty well.
