THE BROKEN ONE is the first book in Ruth Cardello’s “Corisi Billionaires” series. The opening chapter of THE BROKEN ONE gives some foreshadowing for the series and the author’s supposed endgame for this series but doesn’t have much to do with the meat of this story. Whether fate or just dumb luck, a lost toy brings two people together and sparks an attraction. This story is told from alternating perspectives, which gives the reader a better understanding of the two main characters. Sebastian Romano and Heather Ellis have both experienced loss in their lives, but the types of loss and the way they’ve dealt with it over the years have been different. Experiencing loss gives them a connection that a lot of people might not understand and gives them something to build on.
I love this heroine! Sebastian is a guy with baggage at the start of this book. His pregnant wife died, and he hasn’t been the same since. When Heather meets him, he’s a hottie but with crotchety. Heather is sympathetic when she learns of his past, but she never lets Sebastian get away with taking his sour mood out on her. Heather has a blunt way of expressing herself that I and Sebastian both find refreshing. She says what she means, but she has compassion and doesn’t try to be a jerk. Sebastian is a flawed hero but an understandable one who tries to be better and gains more self-awareness after getting to know Heather. Heather and Sebastian learn as they go how to fit into each other’s lives and be in a healthy romantic relationship, but Ruth Cardello balances the humor and sexy times with the angst. The chemistry between these two characters is very believable the passionate moments are red-hot.
THE BROKEN ONE has characters that are real and a romance that is charming, spicy, and frustrating all at the same time. Heather’s BFF Erica and Sebastian’s family act as sounding boards for this couple as they try to navigate a relationship and trusting each other. This is the first book I’ve read by Ruth Cardello, but I look forward to reading the next book in the “Corisi Billionaires” series.
