By day, Sophia Bellamy is a dutiful daughter about to become
engaged to a young man in order to save her family from
financial destruction. By night, Sophia is the Red Rook,
both a criminal and a rescuer as she frees people from the
prisons in the Sunken City. When Sophia's fiancé, René,
seems to have a secret of his own, Sophia's worlds will
collide. With tense suspicion and building intrigue, Sophia
must find her own path to keeping those she loves safe,
including herself.
While I enjoyed Sharon Cameron's previous works, ROOK
absolutely blew me away. From the first page, the sense of
adventure and danger is firmly planted and does not let go
until the very last page. Though the novel is long, the
pacing is quick and the characters nearly intoxicating with
complexity, making it easy to get lost in frantic page
turning. The plot twists are brilliantly timed and nearly
always surprising, perfect for keeping readers on their
toes. The vivid descriptions shape the world building
perfectly, marking every aspect of the story with rich details.
Beyond the incredible adventure and action, the characters
are full of dynamic personalities. Sophia is strong, brave,
and witty, and her life as the Red Rook feels refreshingly
realistic without a savior complex or adrenaline junkie feel
hanging over her. She is her own person who finds excitement
in challenging herself and finds passion in helping the
people of her home area. Alongside her, René is sinfully
suave and charming, and their romantic tension is full of a
slow burn that you know has the potential to light the world
on fire.
Readers dying for a nonstop adventure powered by intense
characters and stunning writing should immediately pick up
ROOK. Sharon Cameron continues to shine in her writing, and
I cannot wait to reread this exciting story.
Who needs a wedding ring when you can pick up a sword? A
remarkable and utterly inventive novel from Sharon Cameron,
author of THE DARK UNWINDING, which USA Today called
"spellbindingly imaginative."
History has a way of
repeating itself. In the Sunken City that was once Paris,
all who oppose the new revolution are being put to the
blade. Except for those who disappear from their prison
cells, a red-tipped rook feather left in their place. Is the
mysterious Red Rook a savior of the innocent or a
criminal?
Meanwhile, across the sea in the
Commonwealth, Sophia Bellamy's arranged marriage to the
wealthy René Hasard is the last chance to save her family
from ruin. But when the search for the Red Rook comes
straight to her doorstep, Sophia discovers that her fiancé
is not all he seems. Which is only fair, because neither is
she.
As the Red Rook grows bolder and the stakes
grow higher, Sophia and René find themselves locked in a
tantalizing game of cat and mouse.
Daring intrigue,
delicious romance, and spine-tingling suspense fill the
pages of this extraordinary tale from award-winning author
Sharon Cameron.
