No wonder Emily Arsenault is considered as New York Times
Notable Author
when she writes novels like WHAT STRANGE CREATURES. It has
a strong storyline
with firm characters that make up this amazing read! Her
writing style informs
you just enough about each one without giving too much
away.
In the beginning
you learn that Theresa, who is in the middle of finishing
up her doctoral thesis,
which is taking way too long, is trying to find proof that
her brother, Jeff is
innocent of murdering his girlfriend Kim. Theresa finds
that Kim has secrets that
involve a political campaign and a man running for Senate,
but does this have
anything to do with her death and if so how? This was
enough to get this mystery
reader hooked on this astonishing novel!
Emily Arsenault's character, Theresa, is a determined
individual that shows
more confidence than some characters I read about. She
stops at nothing to get
answers. I love reading a novel with such a strong leading
character. Emily
Arsenault shows that Theresa does have weaknesses like not
finishing her thesis,
but I feel that does not present her as needy or whiney,
but just human. Bravo for
creating such a great character in WHAT STRANGE CREATURES!
Another thing I love in WHAT STRANGE CREATURES is Emily
Arsenault also
did a wonderful job with a storyline that would seem
believable. With any
election there are always secrets, and with this novel you
will be surprised where
Emily Arsenault takes them. I love it when the author
reveals the secret of a
lifetime at the end that you do not seeing while reading
throughout the book.
Curious yet? It is clever to use such elements in a book.
It catches the reader's
attention and holds it through out until the end, leaving
you astonished when
you close the book. WHAT STRANGE CREATURES by Emily
Arsenault is a must to
read for all mystery lovers.
Scandal, love, family, and murder combine in this gripping
mystery by critically acclaimed author Emily Arsenault, in
which a young woman's life is turned upside down when her
brother is arrested for murder and she must prove his
innocence
The Battle siblings are used to disappointment. Seven
years
after starting her PhD program—one marriage, one divorce,
three cats and a dog later—Theresa Battle still hasn't
finished her dissertation. Instead of a degree, she's got
a
houseful of adoring pets and a dead-end copywriting job
for
a local candle company.
Jeff, her so-called genius older brother, doesn't have it
together, either. Creative and loyal, he's also aimless,
in
both work and love. But his new girlfriend, Kim, a pretty
waitress in her twenties, appears smitten. When Theresa
agrees to dog-sit Kim's puggle for a weekend, she has no
idea it will be the beginning of a terrifying nightmare
that
will shatter her quiet academic world.
Soon Kim's body is found in the woods, and Jeff becomes
the
prime suspect.
Though the evidence is overwhelming, Theresa knows that
her
brother is not a murderer. As she investigates Kim's past,
she uncovers a treacherous secret involving politics,
murder, and scandal—and becomes entangled in a potentially
dangerous romance. But the deeper she falls into this
troubling case, the more it becomes clear that, in trying
to
save her brother's life, she may be sacrificing her own.
