For Regan, the hot new virtual reality app, Elusion, is
nothing new. Her father and her best friend, Patrick, were
the ones who created it after all. After her father died
though, Regan doesn't feel like escaping anymore when it
means having to remember his death all over again when she
wakes up. Soon, however, rumors run rampant about problems
with Elusion, problems that could mean more death. Regan
will have to find out what the truth behind this program,
even if it disillusions the images she had of the people
dear to her.
ELUSION by Claudia Gabel and Cheryl Klam is an intense young
adult science fiction story that will make your heart pound
from both high action scenes and some swoony moments. Gabel
and Klam use rich descriptions to show how enticing the
worlds of Elusion are, and it creates a perfect picture in
your head as to what it might be like having an escape like
that. I love how Regan never denies the pull it has or the
temporary freedom it can offer. She constantly tries to see
things for what (or who) they are, and that makes her
character so nice to read about it. She isn't (at first) die
hard set on either side of the Elusion debate, but always
attempts to see what's really going on. Her clear mind is so
refreshing, and she is a character I have no trouble rooting
for.
The romance isn't as heavily focused on as the
sci-fi/dystopian elements, but it still makes an excellent
element of the novel. Josh is so sweet, and I love how
caring his backstory shows him to be. I really hope to see
more of him in the next book.
ELUSION will give you thrills, swoons, and high
entertainment. Though I did think some of the plot was a tad
predictable, I can see some excellent twists and turns
happening in a sequel. Claudia Gabel and Cheryl Klam are a
great writing duo, and I can't wait to read what they come
up with next.
