As the newest member to an established team of X-men-like superheroes called the Ranger Corps, Dahlia "Ember" Perkins is slowly acclimating to her new duties and powers. She possesses a unique ability to manipulate fire, or more specifically, the heat it gives off. However, honing her powers has become a difficult task when the Meta War isn't willing to wait on her.
Death takes precedence and the team's first freelance assignment involves an uncanny case where two human husks are discovered. Bones, blood and organs are nowhere to be found. Only the skin is left. It's as if the victim's insides simply dissolved. One of these bodies is a John Doe while the other is identified as a janitor from Weatherfield R&D, a scientific research and development company. Interestingly enough, Dahlia has past interests in this firm when she was a struggling newspaper journalist. With renewed effort, Dahlia gets right down to business with this investigation. Yet there seems to be much more than meets the eye when another husk turns up and a fellow team member is injured. This sense of urgency pulls the plot forward, making the pages fly by so quickly!
Kelly Meding crafts an intricate plot that is sure to keep you guessing. Just when you think you know what will happen, Meding shocks you with a premeditated move you didn't see coming. She managed to pull several twists on me and I'm still reeling!
CHANGELING is an entertaining urban fantasy with an interesting storyline, compelling characters and an alluring world. If you're looking for a book that will take you for a ride and shock you, then look no further. CHANGELING is it. I barely had a chance to catch my breath between chapters.
