The French Revolution has taken everything from Simone de
le Fer that she's ever loved. As the only surviving member
of her aristocratic family, she uses her special powers to
save as many innocents as she can. But being a vampire does
have its limitations. Then English spy and assassin Michael
Corday enters her life one night, and all her plans are
changed.
Not knowing her true nature, Corday suggests Simone
accompany him to Paris as his cover and assist him in
finding the traitor he seeks. Since this could also work to
her advantage, she agrees. But it will be hard when she
can't abide the light of day. When local officials with the
Committee for Public Safety cross their paths and become
suspicious, Corday must take drastic measures. With Simone
now insistent on staying with him, an unusual bargain is
struck - she'll be his "pregnant bride." But the charade is
difficult to maintain, and when all the truths are
eventually revealed, Corday is shocked.
Karen Harbaugh's single-title debut gives readers a
new slant on vampirism, and the resolution is a slightly
unusual one. The relationship between Simone and Corday is,
at various times, humorous, passionate and heartwrenching.
This story kept my interest going full-speed until the
final page was turned. A good read.
Beautiful and damned, Simone de la Fer roamed the French
nights as a vampire. A reluctant immortal, she thought
she’d never again taste the bittersweet pleasures of mortal
love—until she met an enigmatic human spy she found
impossible to resist. Haunted by his own violent past,
Michael Corday arrived from England on a secret mission. On
a starlit highway he found his life changed forever by a
creature of the night unlike any he’d ever encountered.
Unable to deny their destiny, they traveled together
through the
Parisian underworld on a dangerously erotic journey to
right a terrible wrong—even as they were stalked by a
merciless hunter intent on destroying them. For theirs was
a passion so taboo, it had been forbidden by human and
vampire alike; so sinful, it could only be paradise. And
they would risk eternal damnation to taste it just once
again...
