My favorite fairytale is East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon. It's got a ton of other fairy tale elements, but is a classic example of the heroine saving herself (and wasn't Christianized by Hans Christian Anderson, or bastardized by the Victorians). bethwade1 at gmail dot com
