FINAL SCORE is the sequel to Lana Ferguson's 2024 hockey romance, The Game Changer. This installment follows Abigail Thompson and Jack Baker, the siblings of the first book's protagonists.
Abigail Thompson has spent most of her life burdened by shame and secrecy as the illegitimate daughter of a legendary hockey player. After finally cutting ties with her father, she's determined to rebuild her relationship with her half-brother and his mother. A burst pipe leaves her apartment uninhabitable. So she is forced to crash with her brother and his girlfriend. Before long, she had had enough of sleeping on their couch and being a third wheel.
Jack Baker is the team's easygoing, carefree golden boy, always quick with a joke and a smile. Beneath that charming exterior, he is quietly struggling with the fear that his injury could take away his hockey career. When he learns that Abby is temporarily staying with his sister and his best friend, he offers her the spare room in his apartment. This sets the stage for an arrangement that involves banter, cooking, and lots of chemistry.
This sports romance explores the tropes of forced proximity, best friend’s sister, and friends-to- lovers. Abby and Jack not only share a sizzling chemistry, but their characters also have an emotional depth. I appreciate the author's thoughtful and sensitive portrayal of mental health, which adds a meaningful layer to the story.
The supporting characters blend well into the plot. The only sour spot in the story is Abby’s father, who has yet to learn his lessons from the previous book. I wish I had seen some character development in him.
