THE NIGHT WE MET by Abby Jimenez is the popular author's latest title. Before I tell you what the story is about, let me tell you why I love the author's books, the ones I've read. The characters, to be specific, the couple in her books, present an intimate atmosphere in the midst of the chaos of life. In this title, we meet Larissa and Chris, who fall for each other while not being together as a couple but as friends.
The story in the background has four close friends whose lives change after being in romantic relationships. While they are still close to each other and spend time together whenever they can, their personal relationships do impact their friendships due to time restraints and they are in different stages of their personal life. On one of their hangouts at a concert, Larissa, whose spending time with the four friends and their partners, ends up being dropped home by Chris's friend. They end up dating and having a relationship which can be described as lukewarm, where only the guy is more invested than Larissa. For various reasons, Chris ends up spending time and becoming good friends with Larissa. They also end up sharing a rescue dog who they take care of while the other is busy. It isn't surprising that Larissa confesses that she wished she had gone home with Chris on the concert night.
As Larissa's relationship suffers due to disappointments and lies, her friendship grows strong with Chris. When Larissa breaks up and ends up as Chris's roommate, Chris puts his friendship on line and decides to give his love for Larissa a chance. As their relationship grows, Chris's friendships suffer not only because of him going after his bestie's girlfriend but also because all the childhood friends are now scattered across the country, professional lives and personal reasons. Chris and Larissa's relationship once again felt like the right people, wrong time, but they still give themselves a fighting chance, which makes them both happy. The friendships, too, ultimately get on a path of recovery and healing.
I loved the relationship between Chris and Larissa. Chris is a lovable guy and his nature is good. He is a great friend and puts up with a lot from his friends. He is great with Larissa both, first as a friend and then later as a boyfriend. Larissa is someone who is doing the best given her circumstances and the million little hustles she has to keep a roof over her head. Together, I loved Chris and Larissa.
I enjoyed how the story is focused on Chris and Larissa as they go about life along with the group of friends they share. The friendship between them, the little moments of I wish, what if it was us in between the dramas and chaos of life, make it a heartwarming read.
If you are an Abby Jimenez fan, you will love this! For someone looking for a romantic read where the characters are in a seemingly impossible situation and yet get together, pick up this book.
