For the first time in years, Vanessa returns to New York City. She’s there for work, but she’s also using this time to reconnect with her family and help out at the family bodega.
While having dinner with her sister, Vanessa runs into an old college friend. Her friend reminisces about the time Vanessa became the “starter ex”, where she would date a guy and then be so terrible he would break up with her. The right girl would then swoop in and seem like a dream.
Lisa, Vanessa’s sister, is in love with her best friend’s brother. Jason doesn’t look at Lisa that way. She begs Vanessa to become the starter ex one last time. Vanessa isn’t interested, but she relents.
Jason seems like a nice guy. Vanessa reels him in, and this starts the cycle of bad behavior. All the while, she’s talking up her sister. But there are times she forgets about the plan and gets lost in the moments with Jason.
If you like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, this is the book for you. There’s a twist involved that makes the story. There are funny moments, as the couple tries to one up each other with ridiculous behavior. They share parts about their lives, both of which include a lot of baggage. Their families add to the humor of the story as they attempt to understand the dating situation. This romance is a fun, fresh read.
