Collins Cartwright, a once-celebrated photographer, has lost her job, her creative spark, and her unique gift, the ability to communicate with the ghosts. The ghosts are her muse, and she cannot photograph without them. Defeated, she retreats to Sweetwater Peak, a small town in the middle of Wyoming. To avoid her parents, her twin sister, and her family’s crumbling antique store, she agrees to work at an upholstering store.
Brady Cooper, a former software engineer turned upholsterer, offers Collins a job and a room in his haunted home. But the spirits that crowd Brady’s shop and house remain eerily silent around Collins, as if intentionally avoiding her. As Collins and Brady grow closer, they begin to unravel why the ghosts are ghosting her and whether their unexpected meeting was destined all along.
SOUL SEARCHING is the first book in the Sweetwater Peak series by Lyla Sage. After charming readers with her beloved Western small-town romance Rebel Blue Ranch series, Sage ventures into new territory with a paranormal romance set in a small town.
The book is set in the charming and haunting Sweetwater Peak. Sage paints the setting with vivid, heartfelt detail, making the town itself feel like a living, breathing character. Along the way, readers meet a cast of memorable locals. They all have their own secrets and stories, which promise to return in future installments of the series.
While both protagonists are compelling on their own, the chemistry between them could have been developed more deeply. Their individual journeys are engaging, but their connection feels a touch underexplored. SOUL SEARCHING is a story that could easily have held another fifty pages, and I would have gladly read every one of them.
