Emma Smith is told by her strict boss that he’s sending her on vacation as a perk. He’s already booked a ticket and hotel. This seems kind but controlling, and the reader suspects something is awry. MONTANA DELTA RODEO COWBOY seems to pack a lot into the title, but the book is just as full of action and change.
Emma is not given to chatting up strange men, although she sits beside a handsome cowboy on the flight to Bozeman. He helps her find her beautiful new suitcase, another gift from her boss. The car sent to collect her contains her escort, Nathan Smalls, but horrors, they don’t even make it to the hotel before a phone call alerts them that Emma’s boss has been killed, and next thing, a gunman is shooting at the car.
Emma is no action figure. Waking up in the Billings Clinic, she is lucky to be nursed by Destry Walsh, among others. Destry is no stranger to bullet wounds like poor Emma’s. He’s retired from the Army early and returned to ranching. As this doesn’t pay yet, he’s qualified as a nurse to save lives. Emma was warned to change her name so she calls herself Pearl, her middle name. Nathan Smalls also made her post her ID home so nobody can contradict her. Somebody thinks she knows something she doesn’t. With this in mind, a DEA task force which is fighting the sudden incursion of a drug cartel arranges for Destry Walsh to act as Pearl’s bodyguard.
This exciting story has a slow part in the middle, describing the time in the hospital, but later includes a rodeo at the Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede in Cody, Wyoming. We’re told Cody maintains a rodeo all summer long.
The subtitle is Bodyguard Protector, which is just what Destry turns out to be, for the lady he knows as Pearl. While a gentle romance is developing, there is always a degree of strain, with Pearl under threat and her future in doubt. Debra Parmley has a tremendous feeling for landscape, doubtless because she and her husband now travel the length and breadth of America in their motorhome. She shows up how lonely a Montana ranch might feel without family, and how fit and capable the Westerners need to be in order to make this their home.
MONTANA DELTA RODEO COWBOY is a good read for romance fans who enjoy cowboys and returned warriors. The danger is just real enough and the characters are impressively drawn.
In the heart of Big Sky Country, where the rugged beauty of Montana surrounds her, Emma Pearl Smith finds herself on the run from one of the most dangerous Mexican cartels operating in Montana. With a target on her back and nowhere to hide, she seeks refuge in the one place she never expected - with a rodeo cowboy who lives by his own code of honor.
Her boss is killed by the cartel, just as she is about to begin her vacation in Bozeman, and her escort, Nathan Smalls, helps Emma go on the run, changing her name to Pearl Hayes.
On their way to Billings, Montana, cartel members catch up to them on the highway and begin shooting. Surprised by a DEA task force set up to stop semi shipments from the cartel, Emma and Nathan escape being killed. But with gunshot serious wounds, they are sent to the Billings Clinic.
Enter Destry Walsh, a battle-hardened Delta Force veteran whose life has revolved around keeping others safe. He's working as an RN when a young woman is brought in with a gunshot wound and sent into surgery, and the ICU, his floor. With a police guard on her door and knowing she'll need protection once she is released, he volunteers to hide her and protect her at his ranch.
When he takes on the job of Emma's bodyguard, he quickly discovers that protecting her is more than a duty - it's a fierce, unyielding passion that ignites in the face of danger. As they get to know each other, the line between shy protector and the shy secretary becomes blurred, igniting a connection neither of them can resist.
With the cartel closing in and a shadowy past that threatens to unravel their fragile sanctuary, time may be running out.
When he takes her to her first rodeo at the Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede in Cody, Wyoming, on the fourth of July, on their first date, she makes one fatal mistake.
In the dusty stands of the rodeo ring beneath the star-studded skies of Cody, Wyoming, love and danger collide, forcing them to fight for their future.
