A DARK AND DEADLY JOURNEY, by Julia Kelly, is the next book in the historical series featuring Evelyne Redfern. Formerly a typist, Evelyne is now an agent for the British Special Investigations Unit, and after healing from a work-related injury, she is now eager to get back in the field. She and her partner, David Poole, are told they are being sent to Portugal, where an informant with supposedly crucial information regarding Germany's war plans has gone missing. Their assignment is to find him, but what they discover is something no one suspected.
Evelyne is a well-crafted protagonist. Competent, whip smart and intuitive she deserves respect, which she doesn't always get. No matter, as she is determined to solve this case. The well-plotted story keeps readers constantly guessing. Brought to life is wartime Lisbon. The city was populated with spies from everywhere, Germans, the wealthy and those just trying to get away from the Germans. The characters all have a back story and most are unsavory. They are a suspicious group and many seem to have connections to each other. As more clues surface, the case becomes even more complex and the danger mounts.
A DARK AND DEADLY JOURNEY is a well-plotted and exciting story. Well-paced, the story moves very quickly to a conclusion that left me looking forward to the next book in the series. Highly recommended.
