Toni Darbyshire, a Victoria professor, sells her first novel, hoping to make enough money to settle her deceased father’s debt and secure funding for her mother’s care. She’s dumbfounded when the book sells at auction and is optioned for a TV series.
When Toni arrives at the auditions, she’s stunned to see the woman she had a one-night stand with as the casting director’s lead choice. Toni and Addie have been emailing ever since their moment together. Toni has neglected to tell Addie her last name or the fact that she named the main character after Addie. Addie already knew Toni’s last name but never shared that she knew all about the book and was auditioning for the role. Sparks fly when they see each other again. But there are roadblocks in the way: Toni doesn’t do relationships, and Addie hasn’t dated much. Can the two of them find a way to be together?
There’s a lot to like about this book. I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the show; I would have read many more of those. I enjoyed the moments at Toni’s day job, even as she was apprehensive about sharing her writing news with the academic world. The romance tropes in this book include: Hollywood, virgin, and one bed. There was, however, too much use of the miscommunication trope. Toni and Addie seemed to keep having the same fight over and over again. While the book is almost 400 pages, the conclusion wrapped up way too quickly. I would have liked the pacing to be similar to that of the main story. Overall, it was a fun read, and I would love to see a companion novel with Toni’s best friend Emily.
* There is an assault moment with a homophobic co-worker that I wish had a deeper conclusion.
