It was never a loving father-daughter relationship. Gertie Glass had last seen her father when she was three years old. She heard more from his lawyer than from him. She had written to him once as a child asking for a favor, which he apparently did without acknowledging it. She thanked him with the only thing she could- an I.O.U., and now that he was dead, it and a request to attend the reading of his will were sent to her. SHE DIDN'T STAND A CHANCE, by Stacie Grey, is the story of what happens after Gertie learns she has been left her father's showcase of a house and part of the family business. To say she was shocked was an understatement, but she wasn't the only one who was shocked. Rendered speechless and furious were her four half-siblings and her father's latest girlfriend. Gertie had lots of questions, and the most pressing was how her father died. Why hadn't the police declared his death accidental? The author brings to life a dysfunctional family in this well-constructed story. It appears they thrived on greed and entitlement instead of air, and someone amongst them might be a murderer. When an attempt to buy Gertie off failed, she became even more suspicious, and with each attempt to find out how her father really died, her own situation became even more precarious. Would she be better off taking a settlement and walking away with her life? SHE DIDN'T STAND A CHANCE is a propulsive psychological thriller. Flawed characters, family secrets and suspense keep the reader engrossed from start to finish. Highly recommended.
The desert heat can be deadly. But nothing kills like a cold heart.
Gertie hasn't seen her siblings since she was a toddler. Now, she's back at the family home she barely remembers, summoned there to witness the reading of her father's will. Shockingly, Gertie stands to inherit a substantial portion of the family business and her father's prized Palm Springs home. And no one is more surprised—and angry—about Gertie's inclusion in the will than her sisters and brothers.
Trapped in a remote house that doesn't feel like home with siblings that don't feel like family, Gertie is isolated in more ways than one. And when she discovers that her father may have been murdered, and a member of the household staff dies not long before she has a near-deadly accident of her own, she realizes she'll be lucky to get out of this unexpected family reunion alive.
A suspenseful read that feels just as suffocating as the dry California air in which it is set, She Didn't Stand a Chance takes readers on a wild journey of jealousy, lies, and family secrets with deadly consequences.
