At first, it was an appealing offer. Tasha and her husband, Aaron, were going to go to Venice and stay in Tasha's older sister, Alice, and her husband Kyle's apartment while Alice and Kyle took care of Tasha's children. Tasha was nervous about leaving their young children, but her marriage was struggling, and maybe a week away alone would bring them closer together. Even with a few minor mishaps, their first few days in Venice went well, but then a phone call brought them rushing home. A home invasion left Kyle dead and Alice badly injured and hospitalized. With no clues or suspects with motives, the investigation goes slowly. Out of the blue, Tasha received a note that read "It was supposed to be you."
THE WRONG SISTER, by Claire Douglas, is a multilayered psychological thriller. The author expertly weaves together the different, but related, veins the narrative follows. While Tasha and Alice resemble each other physically, they are very different people as the story eventually reveals. Tasha is married to a blue-collar worker, and she is content to work part-time and raise her daughters. Alice holds a PhD and is married to a wealthy man. The sisters' lifestyles couldn't be more different, but there are cracks in both sisters' lives. Add to the mix a tragedy from thirty years ago that hangs over the family, and the story becomes propulsive.
Boldly plotted, THE WRONG SISTER moves rapidly. The credible characters are complex, full of surprises and secrets. The real power of the novel comes from what is revealed about the sisters' relationship and what happens when their bond is tested.
I found THE WRONG SISTER to be engrossing and intriguing. It is unpredictable and full of twists and turns. Highly recommended.
