Dodge Kingston returns to Alaska in this first book of the Sky King Ranch series. He fell out with his father and brother over a stupid student weekend and went off to enlist. Now, ten years of service and flying behind him, he is seeing an Alaskan SUNRISE.
Dodge came home because he learned that his father was in the hospital after crashing his small mail plane. This is a nice time to catch the start of the Iditarod dogsled race. Also in town is Echo Yazzie, his former girlfriend, who is busy studying wildlife. And Larke, his sister, married to a SEAL, Riley McCord. Alaskan folks seem to be that bit more hardy and genuine.
There is an understandable complaint about a rogue grizzly pestering homesteads, eating cached meat and threatening the dogs. Also, a coyote is killing chickens. But this does seem two-faced when hunters are out bragging about shooting all the wildlife, bears included, and people eat moose and salmon.
This adventure about piloting bushcraft becomes a romantic suspense story, as the few single women left in the town of Copper Mountain contend with poachers and struggle through storms. Just maybe, there will be a second chance for Echo and Dodge to find love. Dodge has left the Air Force but intends to take up a medical flight job if he stays in Alaska. This is much-needed work, because this is a land where you need to shovel snow off the roof, and beware of hitting a moose on the road. Tourists arrive just for the Iditarod, but the native Denali residents never leave. I had a good time reading the detailed story of survival, friendship and solidarity. Susan May Warren really brings the landscape and people to life in SUNRISE.
Pilot Dodge Kingston has always been the heir to Sky King Ranch. But after a terrible family fight, he left to become a pararescue jumper. A decade later, he's headed home to the destiny that awaits him.
That's not all that's waiting for Dodge. His childhood best friend and former flame, Echo Yazzie, is a true Alaskan--a homesteader, dogsledder, and research guide for the DNR. Most of all, she's living a life Dodge knows could get her killed. One of these days she's going to get lost in the woods again, and his worst fear is that he won't be there to find her.
When one of Echo's fellow researchers goes missing, Echo sets out to find her, despite a blizzard, a rogue grizzly haunting the woods, and the biting cold. Plus, there's more than just the regular dangers of the Alaskan forests stalking her . . .
Will Dodge be able to find her in time? And if he does, is there still room for him in her heart?
Sunrise is the first explosive volume in a new nail-biting series from USA Today bestselling author Susan May Warren.
