WHISPERS OF DEAD GIRLS

Women's Fiction Psychological

After having left her hometown ten years ago, Ren Taylor has returned. She has been hired to teach in her former high school, the place where the nightmare that shaped the rest of her life began. It was here that her sister met the man who was responsible for her death.  Ren's reasons for coming home are complicated. Can she reconcile with her mother who basically rejected her after her sister's death? Is it possible to make peace with the past? However, sometimes the past just keeps repeating itself and sadly this is what happens to Ren when she encounters a fellow teacher who is charming and handsome.  His female students are infatuated with him.  But Ren sees through the polished veneer and as the bodies of young girls mounts she will not let the past repeat itself.

WHISPERS OF DEAD GIRLS, by Marlee Bush, is a dark story.  Do not look for likeable characters here.  Actually, the only character I liked is Ren's dead sister who is very much a part of this story.  Ren sees and hears her voice constantly.  Her words are an important part of the narrative. But, do they carry any weight?  Ren is a woman who is not afraid to take matters into her own hands in her own way.  As the narrative progresses, it becomes obvious there is more than one monster here. All the while, readers may wonder if they were born this way or made.

Skillfully told, this author has crafted a story that is filled with surprises and twists.  Just when it seems all has been revealed readers learn that is not the case at all. Engrossing and haunting, WHISPERS OF DEAD GIRLS is a fascinating story.  Highly recommended.

SUMMARY

She's right. It can never happen again. She won't let it.

Ten years have passed, and Ren Taylor is back at square one, having accepted a job at her old high school. She'd hoped to make peace with the past but now she's thrust back into it: her murdered teenage sister is still immortalized in town, and Ren can't stop seeing her wherever she goes. She's dogged by the scandal that ruined her childhood and killed her sister.

Then Ren meets physics teacher Bryson Lewis. Handsome and charismatic, all the other teachers and students seem to fall at his feet. But Ren knows men like him – she knows they can't be trusted.

The more Ren watches him, the more suspicious she becomes. And when she notices his close relationship with a girl in one of his classes – a girl just like her sister – she worries history is about to repeat itself. This time, she won't sit back and watch another girl be taken before her time.

This time, Ren will do what she must to save her, even if it means revealing her own darkest secrets.
