Women's Fiction Friendship | Women's Fiction Psychological

Thea, a social worker in a New York City psychiatric facility is no stranger to trauma. The sudden appearance of Catherine, a new patient, who is unresponsive and who bears an uncanny physical resemblance to Thea, leads to a startling discovery. Was this woman somehow connected to Thea's past? Before Thea can ascertain answers, the patient is taken from the facility. She tracks her down to a wellness center, of sorts, in a remote area of New Mexico. The proprietors are an attractive and seemingly well-meaning couple.  They advertise that they offer weekend retreats that help people deal with their sexual and romantic issues, which Thea does have.  However, this is not why she signed up for the sessions.  While the cost was steep, she needed answers.  The sessions take place over a weekend.  What could possibly go wrong in such a short time?  As it turns out, plenty.

THE LAST SESSION, by Julia Bartz, is a sinister and dark tale that reveals the depravity that people can inflict on others. The narrative is packed with psychological terms and theories that offer possible explanations for the often intense and even controversial sessions. As readers follow Thea's experiences, we see a woman who is certain she can remain focused on her mission and not be taken in by the cult-like couple. The skillfully constructed narrative is rife with flawed characters. Some are better than others at concealing who and what they really are. Cleverly plotted and fast-moving, THE LAST SESSION is a haunting and provocative story. It will leave readers wondering if anyone at all can be trusted.

SUMMARY

From the instant New York Times bestselling author of The Writing Retreat, a white-knuckled locked-room thriller about a social worker who, after coming face-to-face with her dark past, must infiltrate a mysterious wellness center in the deserts of New Mexico.

When a catatonic woman shows up at the psychiatric unit, social worker Thea swears she knows her from somewhere. She’s shocked to discover the patient holds a link to a traumatic time in her past. Upon regaining lucidity, the patient claims she can’t remember the horrific recent events that caused her brain to shut down. Thea’s at a loss—especially when the patient is ripped away from her as suddenly as she appeared.

Determined to find her, Thea follows a trail of clues to a remote center in Southwestern New Mexico, where a charismatic couple holds a controversial monthly retreat to uncover attendees’ romantic and sexual issues. Forced to participate in increasingly intimate exercises, Thea finds herself inching closer not only to her missing patient, but also to tantalizing answers about her harrowing past. However, time is running out, and if she stays for the last session, she too might lose her mind…or worse.
