All the other mothers at her son Dylan's school don't really hate thirty-one-year-old Florence Grimes. They probably just mock her because she doesn't measure up to their perceived social standards. Florence has never been a conformist, she does her best to avoid them. Since her background includes once being a member of a girl band and her current life is comprised of watching reality TV, drinking Red Bull and making bad decisions, she doesn't have much in common with them. While she is not exactly a candidate for the Mother of the Year award, there is one thing she does have in common with them and that is that she loves her son and will do everything in her power to protect him. She proves that when her son's nemesis Alfie Risby goes missing during a class field trip Dylan was the last to see him. Florence is not a fan of Alfie and makes this clear to readers early on by saying, "The missing boy is 10-year-old Alfie Risby, and to be perfectly honest with you, he's a little shit." One could say that says it all, but there is much more to this story.
In ALL THE OTHER MOTHERS HATE ME, by Sarah Harman, Florence sets out to clear her son's name no matter what it takes even if she has to frame someone else which she is not above doing. Her attempts to find out what happened to Alfie are filled with mishaps and blunders. However, she doesn't give up even if it means she might lose her life.
Witty, candid and unconventional, the story moves quickly. Florence and Dylan are original, quirky and unique characters. Readers might question Florence's mothering techniques and how she lives her life, but she is never boring. For these reasons, ALL THE OTHER MOTHERS HATE ME is an entertaining read.
