Camilla is finally going back to work after maternity leave. But something is wrong. Her husband Luke is not there to help her prepare for this big day. Not only that, he has left a cryptic note and isn't responding to her texts and emails. After dropping their infant daughter off at daycare she went to her office where she was confronted by the police and they didn't bring good news. It seems that Luke is holding hostages at gunpoint. Suddenly, things get worse when gunshots are heard. Two men are dead and Luke is nowhere to be found. In the eyes of the police, he has gone from being a hostage taker to a murderer. Camilla is in a state of shock. How could her kind, loving and good-natured husband do this? Has she misjudged him all these years? Is he truly capable of this awful crime?
FAMOUS LAST WORDS, a novel by Gillian McAllister is a tautly drawn story that keeps readers engaged from start to finish. It delves into a crime that leaves victims who have no apparent identity making the motive even more puzzling. As the story unfolds, Camilla questions everything she thought she knew about her marriage. She faces her unexpected single parenthood the best she can. As the years go by with no news about Luke, she struggles with what to tell her daughter about her missing father, all the while wondering if he has somehow left her some clues.
The author is an excellent story teller. She has crafted a tale that is full of secrets and a myriad of complications and unexplained occurrences. Very little is what it seems to be on the surface in this fascinating narrative and this includes the characters. Packed with mystery, unanswered questions and twists and turns, FAMOUS LAST WORDS is a true page turner. Highly recommended.
