In SCOT AND BOTHERED, Alexandra Kiley follows up her debut novel Kilt Trip with a second book written in the same universe focused on a different Sutherland sibling from The Heart of Scotland tour company. Brooke Sinclair has a history with Jack Sutherland going back seven years to Brooke's senior year when Jack was her teaching assistant at the University of Edinburgh.
In the present day, Brooke Sinclair gave up her dreams of writing her own novel to work as a ghostwriter for famous personalities leaving her depressed and frustrated. Her newest project co-authoring her mentor’s memoir of founding a nature trail on Isle of Skye could be the break that she finally needs or be the failure to keep her stuck. Jack Sutherland doesn’t feel like he fits into the family tour business but he’s not achieving success as a photographer either. The past collides with the present when former lovers are forced to hike the 80-mile Skye Trail so Jack can shoot the pictures for his aunt's book while Brooke searches for a better voice for the narrative of the book.
The story spends as much time in flashbacks to Jack and Brooke’s relationship and break up in college as in the present day. The author uses amazing words and imagery to place the reader in a beautiful setting while the characters unravel their complicated history and present-day fears with a little bit of spice. Really enjoyed the characters and the visit to Scotland and look forward to more books by this author.
Brooke Sinclair’s dream of being a published author derailed when she was expelled from the University of Edinburgh seven years ago. Now a ghostwriter, she sticks to other people’s stories. But when her college mentor, Mhairi McCallister, needs a cowriter for her memoir about Scotland’s most challenging trek, Brooke will do anything for the opportunity—including agreeing to hike the rugged Skye Trail for authenticity’s sake. What she doesn\'t know is that the nature photographer who’ll join her is Jack Sutherland, the teaching assistant who shattered Brooke’s writing career—and her heart.
Between falling for a student despite university rules and walking away from his family’s tour-guiding business to follow his photography dreams, Jack is desperate to prove he didn’t disappoint everyone for nothing. And he can’t ignore his aunt Mhairi’s final wishes for her memoir. Even if it means acting as guide and storyteller for the one who got away. Even if it means keeping secrets about Mhairi’s health.
As Jack and Brooke head into the solitude of the sweeping Scottish landscape, they’re forced to confront old feelings that haven’t disappeared with time. But can two weeks and eighty miles heal years of unspoken hurt and offer a second chance at the end of the trail?
