YIN YANG LOVE SONG by author Lauren Kung Jessen.

Chryssy William - Chinese-American, Herbalist and Chef (aka Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner)

Vin Chao - Italian-Chinese American, Rock Cello artist musician and popular Fan Favorite heartbreaker.

The story revolves around Chryssy and Vin, Chinese-origin Americans. Chryssy is based in Washington, living on an island at her family resort offering healing through Chinese medicinal treatments.

Vin Chao has a band with his brother Leo, playing rock cello. Their music has made them popular stars while their personal life has them named Heartbreakers.

The first meeting is via a mutual acquaintance of theirs - The Sharpes - a popular actor-producer couple. They meet at the couple's only child Charlie's elaborately themed birthday party. The first time they meet is interesting, funny and cute, not only for themselves but also as a reader I too was amused at their chance meeting and the following conversation. Given it was a celebrity party filled with paps, Vin Chao ended up being photographed with Chryssy. This unknown to her and unwanted development proves to be beneficial to both Chryssy and Vin.

Their photos and conversation prove they have chemistry and the fans' reactions are wild. Chryssy has a curse running in her family, where the women are known to find and lose love in life, ending up alone. Vin Chao has a reputation, for breaking hearts, especially those of the women he's dating. Both Chryssy and Vin have important events coming up in the future with a new product line and a world tour respectively.

Seeing the popular and somewhat positive reaction in the social media for their birthday party photographs, Vin forms a plan. With his Agent and PR on his back, Vin needs to be dating and breaking up on schedule with the upcoming tour. Chryssy needs as much media presence, to promote and drum up business for her new product line. Leo on the other hand is secretly nursing a breakup, which the brothers are keen to hide from their business team. A plan is hatched - of fake dating, healing hearts in private and secrecy and to ensure the upcoming business venture of both Chryssy and Vin is as successful as they can make it.

Thus begins the story of creating a Yin Yang song about love, heartbreak and healing.

  • I loved the characters - Chryssy and Vin. Chryssy is as simple as Vin is complex, both are a perfect fit. A fine harmony with the title too, they complement each other well which made my heart sing. It was like seeing two swimmers come together and have an impromptu but synchronized water dance. Well, you get my point if not the example, Eh!
  • Their chemistry comes across as smooth and fluid even when in their hearts they are hesitant and unsure about their wants and desires. A sweet vulnerability and hope in their actions towards each other was romantic and dreamy at places.
  • Chryssy has aunties and an extended family, one heavy with women, she runs and works at the healing resort alongside three of the aunties. The women, what limited time we meet them, are fun and exactly as a family gathering would be nosy, unwanted advice and pampering too, some wisdom and chaotic by no means devoid of some TMI too.
  • It was fun seeing Chryssy and Vin fall for each other and then fight to be together even when they knew Chryssy's family curse and Vin's reputation were bound to break them up.
  • I loved the romance of their relationship, the little and big moments they spent together, and the spontaneous things they did for each other, all of it made me happy to witness their story developing.

Read YIN YANG LOVE SONG for a dose of love, family, secrets, curse solving and a dose of Chinese aunties all in a day's reading. I enjoyed this story and the herbal teas mentioned were much appreciated. If you are looking for a breezy, light romance and some lovely dialogue between the romantic pair, this story has it all. Happy reading.

SUMMARY

In this charming rom-com filled with Chinese traditions and a family curse, an herbalist fake dates a star musician–perfect for fans of Helen Hoang and Jasmine Guillory.

Chinese herbalist Chryssy Hua Williams never actually believed in the Hua family curse. But after Break-Up #9, Chryssy stopped laughing. Now she and her aunties run a special healing retreat center for the broken-hearted. After all, there’s nothing a proper cup of herbal tea can’t fix...but Chryssy’s innocent run-in with celebrity cellist and bad boy Vin Chao has everyone brewing about a different kind of tea. So he offers her a deal: they’ll fake-date, he’ll “break” her heart (and increase ticket sales), and in return, he’ll promote her business.

It’s like Chryssy’s whole cursed love life has been leading up to this moment. But all it takes is one kiss—and a whole lot of unexpected chemistry—to land both of them in hot water . . .
