INHERITANCE by author Trisha Saklecha is the story of a global, high-flying Indian family whose children are scattered across the globe. The patriarch of the Agarwal family has grown his petrochemicals business into a multimillion-dollar venture, alone from scratch. The family is gathering at a secluded Scottish island, belonging to daughter Myra. Keeping in mind his upcoming marriage anniversary celebration and recent health concerns, he’s to announce his heir and pay the children their share in the business.

The children are expecting a big payday and are willing to tolerate the forced socialising at a time when they are going through trying times in their personal lives. The patriarch and his wife are flying in from Delhi along with their son and daughter-in-law. The daughter Myra is eager to welcome them all. Aisha the rebel and troublemaker of the family throws last-minute glitches and delays the proceedings by a day. As they start arriving at the island where they are to stay for less than a week, everyone is in an introspective mood. Once the family is all in place we witness an anonymous murder confession. From here the story is narrated backwards and goes back to the time everyone starts arriving.

Aseem, the son, is under tremendous pressure as he’s handling the sale of the family business. With this high-stakes sale, both Aseem and Myra are expecting radical changes in their lives. Aseem's wife Zoe is a social media influencer and an old friend of the family’s third child Aisha. Aisha has her own troubled life in L.A. and always a cause of concern for her family. She’s the one who has the least expectations from the business sale and just wants the family to accept her boyfriend. The family is divided on the partners of their children and would’ve rather chosen the gathering to be a family-only affair. Each is hoping their father makes the heir announcement as soon as possible and is making an effort to maintain a nonconflicting atmosphere.

With family in such close quarters, secrets, conflict, grudges and more of their past hang-ups come out. There’s a sense of precarious balance and fear of hostility in the air, especially from the children’s partners. Will the children get what they expect or tables turn against one another? Who dies? Who is the killer?

The backdrop of a secluded island retreat is moody and has a presence of its own with the ocean, woods and isolation strong in the air. The killer is the twist and so unexpected. The drama of a joint family especially one typical of Indian families with money is done fairly well. The focus is more on creating tension, and a doubtful atmosphere by engaging the personal issues of the characters. It is done in a way that the killer is only revealed as the last word of the story. The story reflects how personal dramas play a role in the big picture of a family dynamic where everyone is vying to be the heir.

We see the personal dynamic of a family at play, how their partners play a role in their lives and choices – both good and bad. Inheritance is the big prize and how it pits family members against each other. How loyalties take on a fluid role when it comes to money. We see how loyalty and assumptions create irreversible trajectories for the family members. It weaves a clear yet complex backdrop of a family fabric embedded with years of secrets, choices and loyalty.

I loved the twist at the end though and it definitely saddened me at how the family ended up. It is both apt and makes one sad for human nature and how it, at times, is selfish and focuses on self-preservation at any cost.

SUMMARY

Most family reunions end in tears. This one will end in murder.

Meet the Agarwals, who have gathered on a private, luxury island off the west coast of Scotland for a much-anticipated family reunion.

Raj, the patriarch and a business tycoon, is about to announce to his wife and three children the succession plan for his multimillon-dollar Delhi-based company. Shalini, the fragile matriarch, is ready to have her husband to herself after years of sacrifice to the family business. Myra, the golden child, owner of the island and host of the reunion, is, unbeknownst to her family, on the brink of bankruptcy. Aseem, the son and supposed heir, is torn between his love for his wife and his duty to family. Aisha, the youngest, a party girl whose antics are legendary, can’t pass up an opportunity to wreak havoc. And then there’s Zoe, Aseem’s wife, the outsider whose #InstaPerfect life is built on a foundation of lies.

They’ve all got secrets they would die to protect. Who will survive this high-stakes reunion, and who will become a victim of their own greed? One thing is certain: this family gathering will shatter more than just their illusions of unity.
