YOU BELONG WITH ME is author Mhairi MacFarlane's latest book. I've always felt her stories are relatable with a touch of aspiration, while not magical but close enough. Have you ever wondered how it must be for someone with a 9 to 5, town girl life who dates and falls for a celebrity/ a heartthrob? How it must be for the non-celebrity or for the famous partner?
This is what YOU BELONG WITH ME is all about, Edie an Ad Exec, and copywriter from London meets Elliot Owen, an actor, famous for his roles in action and fantasy movies. Elliott falls for Edie when they're working on his biography, while it starts hot and heavy while working together, as the project ends so do they. Elliot though can't get her out of his mind and since they are from the same town, he ends up visiting her around Christmas day asking for a second chance.
The couple gets back together and their relationship from Edie's side is very tumultuous. She has a lot of self-doubt and distrust about them. Elliot being a heartthrob actor adds another layer of insecurity for Edie.
I felt the drama and insecurity were always a bit more from the heroine's end most of the time, she never really believed they would last. Although when she finally realises they can make a go of it, the hero opens the proverbial can of worms about all the insecurities surrounding them.
I was always playing catchup half the time they were together in their long-distance relationship. The good, romantic moments were few and far between with dramas always surrounding them. It was like their professions were writing the script for their real life. Edie being an ad exec always worried about what was happening in Elliot's shooting, scripts and scenes with female co-stars.
Elliot was more mature, caring and sensitive towards Edie and mindful of how she felt being part of the limelight due to him. Whereas Edie was always too late catching up with Elliot and how things were for him, to be honest, she came across as a bit selfish to me.
Overall, the story shows the different sides of being a celebrity and that of a non-celebrity person in a relationship. You will witness the good, the bad and the ugly of celebrity dating. Of course, there are also fun times, courtesy of quirky family members, friends and opportunistic colleagues. I enjoyed the celebrity hero Elliot more. I could not relate to his love interest Edie, that's just me maybe you'll end up liking them both so pick up a copy and enjoy some dating drama.
International bestseller Mhairi McFarlane delivers a charming, hilarious, and heartfelt new novel about a woman adjusting to life in the spotlight when she begins a relationship with a famous actor, in this highly anticipated follow-up to Who's That Girl.
She found The One. But when everyone wants him, can she keep him?
Edie found true love. And on Christmas day, he’s knocking at her door.
Elliot Owen is handsome, charming and basically Hollywood royalty. And, he insists, madly in love with Edie Thompson: an ordinary citizen with tomato soup stains on her coat. It’s going to be complicated. Edie will have to learn how to live in the limelight, but they’re just too good together not to try.
Edie discovers it’s not easy when the press is the third person in your relationship, or when stories start leaking that force you to mistrust the motives of those around you. It’s tricky when you’re separated by an ocean and gorgeous co-stars and charismatic new colleagues are closer by. It’s harder still when your past is raked up by envious people determined to destroy your present.
Edie already knows how it feels to be infamous, now she’s going to find out what it’s like to be famous.
Are she and Elliot a fairytale, or a cautionary fable about getting what you wish for?
