NATALIE CANA pens a happily ever after for a third book in the VEGA FAMILY LOVE STORIES in SLEEPING WITH THE FRENEMY. The series is set in Chicago and matches up the siblings in the boisterous, Puerto Rican Vega family.
The first book A Proposal They Can't Refuse utilized a fake dating/engagement trope so chef Kamilah Vega and whiskey distiller Liam Kane could thwart their grandfathers' plans for them to marry while allowing them each to keep the respective family businesses they want. In A Dish Best Served Hot, the author uses second-chance romance/single dad tropes to reunite high school sweethearts Santiago Vega and Lola Leon as they join together to save a community center and end the long-standing feud between their grandfathers.
With sister’s best friend/secret friends with benefits at the forefront, SLEEPING WITH THE FRENEMY focuses on the last single Vega sibling, Leo, and Kamilah’s estranged best friend, Sofia Santana. The couple had an on-again/off-again sexual relationship that abruptly ended when Sofia cut communication with all the Vegas and left for Paris after a big fight at Kamilah’s engagement. Five years later she returns home, unhappily working for her father’s company and carrying the same baggage she left with when it comes to the Vega siblings. Leo is carrying his own baggage. Struggling after losing his place as a firefighter due to being shot (in a prior book) and not being taken seriously by his family and Sofia, Leo grudgingly accepts help from meddling relatives. The family dynamic was fun to read including the relatives scheming to get the couple together. But unlike other books with Spanish-speaking characters, the author throws in frequent Spanish dialogue that is not explained or translated causing a non-fluent reader to have to stop and try to figure out the gist of the content. This along with the somewhat unlikable main characters caused this to be only an okay read for me.
The third book in the riotously funny Vega Family Love Stories finds self-assured firefighter Leo Vega trying to reignite a flame that’s gone cold and finally bring his secret love affair into the open.
Leo Vega’s love life has been on life support since long before the gunshot wound that put him on leave from the fire department. Now, a year after his injury, he’s finally able to return to work, but he’s no closer to fixing things with Sofi, his sister’s best friend and the woman he’s had a secret on-again, off-again relationship with for years. Sofi is still reeling from the revelation that her best friend lied to her years ago, setting her life on a course she’s resented ever since. She’s done with the Vega family, and that includes Leo, who has always prioritized his tight-knit clan over their relationship. She’s moving on with her life, but then circumstances beyond their control push Sofi and Leo into a tense roommate situation. It’s almost impossible to move on with someone new when Leo is there, reminding her what they had, every day.
When his great-granddaughter Rosie tips Papo Vega off about what’s been going on between Leo and Sofi, he’s on the case, with reinforcements. Working behind the scenes alongside Sofi’s mom, he’s determined to help these two stubborn lovebirds end up where they belong—together.
