WE SOLVE MURDERS is the latest from author Richard Osman. If you are a mystery fan you'd have definitely heard of him, especially his latest The Thursday Murder Club series, which has been immensely popular with mystery fans.
I always love a mystery/thriller in between reading literary fiction, it's the perfect genre to refresh my mind or cleanse my reading palate if you will. Let's meet the crew of WE SOLVE MURDERS which by the end of the book is also a full-fledged PI firm complete with a mascot cat named Trouble.
We have the lead investigator, if you will, Steve who is an ex-cop now living a quiet, exciting village life in England. Next up, let's call her the muscle is Amy, Steve's daughter-in-law, who works private protection for hire at a security agency in London. The third, undoubtedly quirky, glamorous member is Rosie, a famous novelist and Hollywood writer.
I'll just set up the premise of the story for you without spilling much. Amy is on a job protecting Rosie against a death threat, keeping low they've set base on an island house off the coast of South Carolina. Steve on the other side of the pond is leading a routine life, hushing away his grief of being widowed. He has his routines, friends and the pub quiz, he does it all while discussing the current affairs with his friends.
Soon a string of influencer deaths has Steve's spidey senses tingling. And soon enough Amy is the next target with her firm involved in it all and maybe something bigger. With her leaning on Steve for help starts a whirlwind hop across countries as Amy and Rosie dodge bullets while waiting for Steve to fly out and help them.
I enjoyed -
Wow, Steve as an Investigator, and also an ex-cop is a character I immediately liked. Not only are his little habits endearing, but his whole attitude towards dealing with assassins and whatnot is so nonchalant. It almost felt like he was simply an old man inconvenienced by it all and only tolerating it to help his daughter-in-law. If he wasn't one of the main leads I doubt he would've brought any attention to himself. It's the kind of character which works really well for me in a mystery setting.
Amy is good in her own right and her conversations with both Steve and Rosie are reminiscent of a parent and child and their generational gap moments. Off tangent, nagging yet loving at the same time.
Rosie - wow she is the most adventurous one. Thought to be at least in her 70s but never sure of it. She is one hell of a character, with endless money, a private island, personal airplanes and the whole high-flying entourage. She is the sugar mama strictly in a nonpersonal way as they hop countries dodging the assassins on their tail.
The trio makes up for a fun ride as they solve the identity of the person who's ordered the hit on employees and clients of Amy's workplace. The bad guy is also so unexpected, at least for me that is. I never suspected them to be the villain, so that's a job well done by the author as far as I'm concerned.
It was thrilling and felt like a good old chase between the good and the bad guys except it was done in style with the help of private planes, help from rich, influential friends and in some stunning locations.
I would love for you to pick up a copy as soon as you can and enjoy the wild ride, never short of laughs and flirting too, catching some not-so-smart criminals.
