Alyssa and Logan first meet at a supermarket where she works the check-out counter and Logan hangs out with his friends. Their first interaction is when Logan is having issues with paying for the groceries and Alyssa helps him out. They become friends, then besties and hang out with each other all the time while they are in high school. Logan becomes an emotional anchor for Alyssa as much as she helps him see the good and hope in life.
Logan falls first and just before she goes off to college they fall in love. However, Logan's addiction issues keep rearing their ugly head and causing issues for them. One tragic incident later Logan along with his brother Kellan and Alyssa end up in the hospital. What follows is a lot of anger, heartbreak and distance between Logan and Alyssa. As Logan heads to rehab and Alyssa back to her life without her best friend, it's a bleak period in their lives.
5 years later, Alyssa and Logan are again having to face and support their siblings who are getting married to each other. The sparks still fly and once burn for Aly and Logan. This time they tread carefully to give themselves a second chance.
I enjoyed:
The emotional dynamic between Alyssa and Logan. It is so beautiful and heartbreaking yet affirming all at once. Their journey from friendship to lovers is filled with love, angst and everything in between. It was emotionally satisfying to be with them on this journey.
Logan is a character who has so much opportunity to damage and self-destruct, which he does to an extent, and yet he somehow keeps hopes and dreams alive in his heart.
The relationship they share with their siblings feels like such an important part of the story, it strengthens Alyssa and Logan. The loyalty and cheerleading their siblings had towards each other were fantastic.
The FIRE BETWEEN HIGH AND LO is an emotional, heart-wrenching story of love, family and addiction. Keep some tissues handy for the silent tears and sniveling you are bound to experience. All in good faith and towards the better lives of the characters, of course.
Logan Francis Silverstone and I were complete opposites. I danced, and he stood still. He was quiet, while I ran my mouth. He struggled to find a smile, and I refused to frown.
The night I saw the darkness that truly lived inside of him, I couldn't look away.
We were broken together, yet somehow whole. We were wrong together, but always right. We were the stars that burned across the night sky, searching for a wish, praying for better tomorrows.
Until the day I lost him. He threw us away with one hasty decision—a decision that changed us forever.
There once was a boy, and I loved him. And for a few breaths, a few whispers, a few moments, I think he loved me, too.
Consistently topping BOOKTOK's "Books That Make You Ugly Cry" lists, The Fire Between High & Lo brings the angst, the spice, and the beautifully painful longing…
