The Dallergut Dream Department Store

Paranormal | Fantasy Magical Realism | Fantasy Urban

Set in a universe where there's a department store selling dreams to people who walk into the store once they are asleep. There are also mythical creatures who run around renting and providing clothes to people who walk in without them. After all not everyone sleeps in matching pajamas or clothes for that matter. Besides this, it's all normal like in the world we live in. The townspeople have the same lives, ambitions and dreams as you and me.

This is where it might get a little unbelievable for some readers as we mainly follow Penny, also partly her Boss Dallergut - the one the store is named after, the latest recruit at the town's more popular dream store - DALLERGUT DREAM DEPARTMENT STORE. She starts at the reception, assisting the long-standing employee who is the head receptionist, you can say. There are five floors in the store selling dreams set up in various categories and each floor has a manager, all of whom we meet. Well if there's a dream packaged up to sell, there must be someone who must be making these dreams right?

There are dream makers and we meet the top five, Santa makes an appearance too along with leprechauns for good measure. We also witness the dream maker's awards, what dreams sell more, and a bit about their conception from the makers too.

With a cast of sleepy customers, maybe you and me living on Earth, say, a dream-selling store, its employees, the dream maker and mythical fluffy characters, we have it all nearly tied up with how the customers pay for the dreams they are buying at the DALLERGUT DREAM DEPARTMENT STORE.

I am sure this has at least piqued your interest if not made you completely curious. Also, if you are thinking of giving all this dream buying a chance, get a copy now.

I enjoyed -

  • How the author creates a parallel world where we can go and buy dreams and pay for them, without worrying if we have enough or the right amount of change handy.
  • The narration and the whole crew of characters were presented in a way where it did not feel like being in an alien or a world other than the one we live in when not sleeping.
  • There's the right amount of magic and fantasy that makes this an enjoyable read.

The story makes you want to go to sleep or grab a quick nap and try to reach this mythical department store and buy yourself a dream.

SUMMARY

ITH OVER ONE MILLION COPIES SOLD, THE INTERNATIONALLY BESTSELLING SENSATION ARRIVES IN AMERICA. For fans of magical realism and the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series by Toshikazu Kawaguchi comes this cozy fantasy debut.

What if there was a store that sold dreams? Which would you buy? And who might you become when you wake up?

In a mysterious town hidden in our collective subconscious there's a department store that sells dreams. Day and night, visitors both human and animal shuffle in to purchase their latest adventure. Each floor specializes in a specific type of dream: childhood memories, food dreams, ice skating, dreams of stardom. Flying dreams are almost always sold out. Some seek dreams of loved ones who have died.

For Penny, an enthusiastic new hire, working at Dallergut is the opportunity of a lifetime. As she uncovers the workings of this whimsical world, she bonds with a cast of unforgettable characters, including Dallergut, the flamboyant and wise owner, Babynap Rockabye, a famous dream designer, Maxim, a nightmare producer, and the many customers who dream to heal, dream to grow, and dream to flourish.

A captivating story that will leave a lingering magical feeling in readers' minds, this is the first book in a bestselling duology for anyone exhausted from the reality of their daily life.
