Romance Contemporary

READY OR NOT by Cara Bastone, is my first book by the author and I loved it.

The story -

. Set in New York

. Accidental pregnancy

. Best friend's brother

. Not with the baby daddy

. Friends to Lovers

The plot summary sounded pretty good and made me pick up this book with no difficulty. I like the cover too and being set in New York sealed the deal for me. Eve's life is taking it how it comes type and she lives away from family, in the same city as her bestie Willa and her brother Shep. The siblings are more like a family away from family for Eve, her sharing everything with Willa mostly as it's happening.

Willa is intent on becoming a mother as soon as possible and Eve's never really thought of it. So it's both a surprise and a shock to both when they learn Eve's one-night stand with a local bartender has resulted in a pregnancy. Things get a little silent between the friends for a while and Shep, Willa's brother steps in to make sure they both navigate this silence and awkwardness without threatening their friendship any further.

Shep is fresh out of a long-term relationship, living with his sister and brother-in-law. He has always had a soft spot for Eve; which is something everyone except Eve knows and is like his own secret. When it's pretty sure the baby daddy isn't gonna be as involved as Eve would've liked it's just her and her friends, plus some sneaky pregnancy hormones, trying to make a go of it and getting ready for the baby in their lives. Will Shep confess his feelings or Eve realise something she has never given clear thought to whether she's ready or not now that the baby is almost here? Pick up a copy and find out, you will not be disappointed.

I would like to start by saying how we readers always dream of finding and then get excited about books that we think would make an absolute darling movie especially if it's a romantic comedy. READY OR NOT reads like a dream and would make a great Hallmark movie. I kept imagining it all happening with some pleasant weather and stunning locations around Brooklyn. Cool, cosy and romantic spaces for the characters' homes and workplaces, some eye candy extras, and boho 90s fashion; I bet you will have a fun time reading about and imagining them through it all.

I like the dynamic Eve, Willa and Shep share. Individually they are all so sweet and cool. Shep is the one you want by your side amid a storm, his attitude might seem a bit resigned at times but overall in the big picture, he's the one you'd want to crown the hero. Eve is well Eve not exactly a tree-hugging, love child stuck in a rut but she takes the pregnancy one day at a time, getting to know herself and making decisions she might have never given a second thought to. She blossoms as a person and takes the reins of her and the baby's life in her hands. She owns every emotion and decision she wouldn't have as strongly as she does before it all.

Shep and Eve's chemistry and friendship are pure swoon, the little moments they share are so sweet and dreamy. I love how considerate they are towards each other even as friends and eventually how they come together is WOW. The friendship between them all adds depth and lightheartedness at the same time to their story. I'd recommend you grab a copy if you need a pick-me-up, or simply want to see people falling in love, what with Valentine's Day around the corner.

I enjoyed and loved reading READY OR NOT without any complaints, hope you do too.

Happy Reading.

SUMMARY

A surprise pregnancy leads to even more life-changing revelations in this heartfelt, slow-burn, friends-to-lovers romance of found family and unexpected love.

Eve Hatch lives for surprises! Just kidding. She expects every tomorrow to be pretty much the same as today. She loves her cozy apartment in Brooklyn that’s close to her childhood best friend Willa, and far from her midwestern, traditional family who has never really understood her. While her job is only dream-adjacent, it’s comfortable and steady. She always knows what to expect from her life . . . until she finds herself expecting after an uncharacteristic one-night stand.

The unplanned pregnancy cracks open all the relationships in her life. Eve’s loyal friendship with Willa is feeling tense, right when she needs her the most. And it’s actually Willa’s steadfast older brother, Shep, who steps up to help Eve. He has always been friendly, but now he’s checking in, ordering her surprise lunches, listening to all her complaints, and is . . . suddenly kinda hot? Then, as if she needs one more complication, there’s the baby’s father, who is (technically) supportive but (majorly) conflicted.

Up until this point, Eve’s been content to coast through life. Now, though—maybe it’s the hormones, maybe it’s the way Shep’s shoulders look in a T-shirt—Eve starts to wonder if she has been secretly desiring more from every aspect of her life.

Over the course of nine months, as Eve struggles to figure out the next right step in her expanding reality, she begins to realize that family and love, in all forms, can sneak up on you when you least expect it
