Subtitled "How To Be A Scout," DO YOUR BEST is the perfect guide for the Scout, Girl Guide, or former Scout in your life. The author Bear Grylls is world-famous, having reached a large audience via the Discovery Channel series after achieving the summit of Mount Everest aged 23, a then record for youngest climber; this was after he’d broken his back parachuting with the British Army, serving in the SAS. "Do your best" has been Bear’s motto since he learned it as a Scout himself.
Today, Bear is the World Chief Scout, alternatively, Chief Ambassador of World Scouting, and author of several books. This book is not about him. Instead, it’s about knots, tracking, first aid, camping, and cookouts. Yes, this is Scouting for Boys updated, making Scouting non-gendered, and including chapters on climate change, uses for plastic and reasons to use less of it, cyber-bullying, as well as the use of a defibrillator when administering CPR, or resuscitation as we used to call it. Told in a conversational manner with basic illustrations, there are reminders to be reliable and do what you say you’ll do, to keep cheerful, and to make good use of all the time in each day. We’re also reminded that of the twelve people who have walked on the Moon, eleven were Scouts.
Maybe not every Scout needs to know about the ten highest mountains on Earth. That’s the author’s personal interest showing. I would have liked more than two exceptional women leaders named among the many men. Ellen MacArthur, a solo yachtswoman, and Amelia Earhart, a solo pilot, should probably have been joined by Serena Williams, tennis champion and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and Eileen M. Collins, the first female American Space Shuttle pilot and Commander. I can think of more, equestrian women springing to mind, but that’s my personal interest. Also, being kind to animals was a big thing when I joined the Guides, but it barely gets a mention, except for respecting wildlife and watching wild birds. I think someone who travels as much as Bear may not keep a pet.
As ever in Scouting, the emphasis in DO YOUR BEST is on helping others and growing up to be someone who can help others and themselves. Question scenarios are given near the end, asking what you would do if a friend got injured on a hike, or you were lost in the woods, or you hiked alone with minimal gear and broke your arm. These should provoke lively responses and will demonstrate if the reader has absorbed the lessons. The principles carry through to life in suburbia or an urban office. If you can give help and get help outdoors, you can do it in the street. DO YOUR BEST: HOW TO BE A SCOUT by Bear Grylls describes not just what Scouts do, but why we do it. I had a great time reliving memories while I read, and I can recommend the book to Scouts and prospective Scouts everywhere.
What more could you ask for, than a book stuffed like an overfilled rucksack with tips and tricks from one of the world's most celebrated adventurers from pitching a tent, leading a team, how to keep fit, tie knots, memorise facts, identify trees, stars and birds, as well as learning real survival skills like putting up a tent in the wild and stashing your breakfast in ground to keep it hot for the next morning?
