A rich new fantasy world to fall in love with? Yes, please. Fans of romantasy will devour FALL OF RUIN AND WRATH by Jennifer L. Armentrout.
Calista (Lis) is an orphan who, with her friend Grady, has had to survive as a lowborn in a world where Hyhborn rule. She has a power that she hides away from most but she ends up saving both Grady and herself when she sees the Baron getting killed right before it happens by him brushing against her. For some reason, he actually believes her and offers her a place in his home. She makes sure Grady can go too and soon they are fed and clothed without having to wonder where their next meal is. All she has to do is follow his orders and do anything he asks of her.
With tensions high from a looming rebellion, a prince visits the manor where Lis lives and an undeniable connection ensues. The spice is classic Jennifer L. Armentrout and it was beyond swoony. I fell in love with these two. The way Calista was with the prince was sexy, hot, and wanton. I felt myself actually sweating with anticipation. I'm so excited for more.
The world-building was easily my favorite aspect of FALL OF RUIN AND WRATH. It felt robust and left much to be learned. There’s definitely more to come and I can’t wait for it. Archwood, the realm they live in reads as its own character, and many things happen based on it and where it is located. It is hard to say more as it would give too much away.
Although I would have liked to see more of the past in flashbacks with Calista and other characters I think Jennifer L. Armentrout did an incredible job of starting this series. I think she gave us plenty of intrigue, heart-pounding suspense, and of course, spice to have the reader, such as myself wanting more.
