In Mia Sheridan’s STINGER, we’re given the story of an unlikely relationship between a current porn star and an aspiring lawyer. When Grace Hamilton goes to Las Vegas for a law conference, she (literally) bumps into Carson Stinger, Straight Male Performer, and her life is forever changed. The chemistry between them is electric, but Grace knows that with her aspirations and his current career, they have no future. But they do have the present, and they’re going to make the most of it.
I found STINGERto be gripping from the very first page. Mia Sheridan does a fantastic job laying out all the rules Grace sets for herself as well as Carson’s fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants ways, even if it is only a persona. Their connection was captivating, and I loved how they each came to see each other not only for who they were, but who they wanted to be. Their weekend in Vegas was enough to inspire each of them to make changes in their lives, and I thought this was a testament to how they made each other a better person. The first half of the book was the highlight of the story for me. Learning about Grace and Carson, and how they both had very sad pasts, allows the reader to really get to know them. Carson was alone in this world, but at least Grace had her father and sisters to support her along the way.
As for the end of this story, it felt bogged down by an issue that the author introduced. While I do think this is an important issue that needs to be highlighted, I also felt it went on for too long and didn’t feel like an organic part of the story. It felt very forced to me, and for that, the last third of this book suffered. There was also a relationship thrown in for drama’s sake, but it felt like it was supposed to be an obstacle, only it turned out not to be one.
There were some real highlights in STINGER. I adored how Grace and Carson were catalysts for change in each other's lives. Mia Sheridan tugs at the heartstrings with this one, and it has made me so excited to continue through her previous books!
