Romance Historical

In 1954, Mila has allowed her mother, Magda, to take over her life.  Magda has deemed they will make a fresh start In Cornwall's White Valley in the dilapidated house they have bought.  Magda has big plans to restore the house to its former grandeur, but all Mila wants is to provide a safe and happy home for Janey, her five-year-old daughter.  From the time they arrive and each in their own way, they sense a presence in the valley.  Nothing tangible at first, but there is a feeling of being watched. They find themselves in a place where they are basically unwelcome.  The house has a troubled past, but no one will tell them what happened.  Why?

Author Jane Johnson brings to readers a fascinating group of characters in THE WHITE HARE. Mila is a determined woman who is gradually finding the strength to stand up to her domineering and often cruel mother.  Magda is a vain and controlling woman who has been a horrid mother.  Janey, a delightful and precocious child, fully embraces her new home and her closest companion, a plush bunny named Rabbit becomes much more than that.  The women have a rather unusual introduction to Jack, a mysterious and vague individual who gradually becomes part of their lives.

As the renovations and the story move along, there are strange happenings and findings.  Eventually, secrets are revealed and elements of the past are brought into the present.

Rich in imagery, Jane Johnson expertly draws readers into the storyline of THE WHITE HARE, which is rich in legend, myths, mystique, and the power of family.  Highly recommended.

SUMMARY

In the far west of Cornwall lies the White Valley, which cuts deeply through bluebell woods down to the sea at White Cove. The valley has a long and bloody history, laced with folklore, and in it sits a house above the beach that has lain neglected since the war. It comes with a reputation and a strange atmosphere, which is why mother and daughter Magdalena and Mila manage to acquire it so cheaply in the fateful summer of 1954.

Magda has grand plans to restore the house to its former glory as a venue for glittering parties, where the rich and celebrated gathered for cocktails and for bracing walks along the coast. Her grown daughter, Mila, just wants to escape the scandal in her past and make a safe and happy home for her little girl, Janey, a solitary, precocious child blessed with a vivid imagination, much of which she pours into stories about her magical plush toy, Rabbit.

But Janey’s rabbit isn’t the only magical being around. Legend has it that an enchanted white hare may be seen running through the woods. Is it an ill omen or a blessing? As Mila, her mother, and her young daughter adjust to life in this mysterious place, they will have to reckon with their own pasts and with the secrets that have been haunting the White Valley for decades.
