"Different From Your Typical Historical Fiction"

Fresh Fiction Review

The Dressmaker’s Secret

Women's Fiction Historical | Women's Fiction Time Slip

Incredible. Page turning. Super engaging. Magnificently described and told, THE DRESSMAKER'S SECRET by Lorna Cook was unputdownable and different from the typical WWII novel.

Chloe decides to spend a year in Paris after her marriage fails. She intends to figure out what she wants from life but along the way she decides to learn more about her grandmother, Adele, and what working for Coco Chanel was really like. Adele keeps quiet about the war and what happened over there but Chole wants to learn more before it's too late and her grandmother is gone.

THE DRESSMAKER'S SECRET has two timelines: one in present-day Paris and one in wartime Paris telling Adele's story. I cannot even put into words how incredible each timeline flows and gives graphic detail about what each woman must endure. It was so exciting to learn more about the role Coco Chanel played in Nazi Paris and how power was the number one priority in wartime. In the present day, Chole wasn't able to understand what Adele went through and she really struggles with relating to her grandmother's position.

THE DRESSMAKER'S SECRET by Lorna Cook is a novel that should be read on a couch with a blanket and the sun or the moon outside your window. Set the atmosphere and dig in. You'll find yourself lost in this masterpiece for hours.
