Someday, Maybe

Women's Fiction Family Life | Multicultural African-American

When readers first meet Eve, the main character of SOMEDAY, MAYBE by Onyi Nwabineli, we learn that her husband, Quentin, is dead.  He died by suicide, leaving no note and no clues as to why. What follows is an intimate, no holds barred exploration of grief. Readers are granted a front-row seat into something incredibly private and significant.  Eve's life rapidly spirals downward, alarming her family and friends.  Nothing is concealed here as Eve shares everything.  Even though Quentin is dead, his story remains and we get to know him through Eve's memories.

There is much about SOMEDAY, MAYBE that is impressive.  Eve is a protagonist we can connect with as she struggles to find an explanation. Her observations often deliver a punch. A touching depiction of her family and her relationship with them is rendered. Her eclectic group of old and new friends that add much to the narrative. Skillfully interwoven with the profound dialogue is wit.

Even though SOMEDAY, MAYBE by Onyi Nwabineli is about grief, it is a love story, too. Powerful and absorbing, this memorable story is well worth reading. If you or anyone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please dial 988 or visit https://988lifeline.org/ for help and resources.

SUMMARY

Here are three things you should know about my husband:

  1. He was the great love of my life despite his penchant for going incommunicado.
  2. He was, as far as I and everyone else could tell, perfectly happy. Which is significant because…
  3. On New Year’s Eve, he killed himself.

And here is one thing you should know about me:  I found him.
Bonus fact: No. I am not okay.
