Women's Fiction Family Life | Thriller Paranormal - Supernatural | Thriller Psychological

In this debut novel, readers meet Maya seven years after her best friend, Aubrey, suddenly dies while talking to Frank, Maya's romantic interest.  No cause of death was ever determined.  Maya was certain Frank was responsible, but she didn't know how to prove it.  As she tries to get off drugs, she happens upon a video in which another young woman dies while talking to Frank. Once again, Maya is certain of Frank's involvement and is determined to find out just what Frank has done and how.

This unique story is told in both the past and the present. The Maya of seven years ago and the Maya of today are very different people.  Tension is constant throughout the entire narrative as Maya looks for answers and explanations for happenings that have troubled her for years.  Who is Frank really, and what is he capable of?

I found THE HOUSE IN THE PINES to be a well-plotted psychological mystery.

SUMMARY

Maya was a high school senior when her best friend, Aubrey, mysteriously dropped dead in front of the enigmatic man named Frank whom they'd been hanging around with all summer. Seven years later, Maya lives in Boston with a loving boyfriend and is kicking the secret addiction that's allowed her to cope with what happened all those years ago; the gaps in her memories and the lost time that she can’t account for. But her past comes rushing back when she comes across a recent YouTube video in which a young woman suddenly keels over and dies in a diner while sitting across from none other than Frank. Plunged back into the trauma that has defined her life, Maya heads to her Berkshires postindustrial hometown to relive that fateful summer—the influence Frank once had on her, and the obsessive jealousy that nearly destroyed her friendship with Aubrey. And before too long all roads are leading back to Frank's cabin…
