In THE PAPER CAPER, the 16th Bibliophile Mystery, Brooklyn Wainwright plans to rebind a first edition of The Prince and the Pauper over four days as part of a working exhibit during the Covington Library's first annual Mark Twain Festival. Joseph Cabot, multibillionaire and newspaper owner, is sponsoring the festival and heavily promoting several days of activities throughout the city. After rescuing Joseph from a corporate kidnapping and developing a friendship, Derek Wainwright's team provides security for the five days of scheduled festival events.
The novel begins with details describing the launch party at the Covington Library for the festival where Brooklyn and Derek visit with Joseph, his wife Ella, and meet Ella's mother, Ingrid. Part of the festivities is a "Look Alike" contest where a doppelganger for Joseph will change places and live in his mansion while Joseph lives in the winner's home for four days. Joseph intends to announce the winner the following evening at a private party in his home.
The next evening, Hobson, the butler, welcomes Brooklyn and Derek to Joseph's impressive home, where a floor-to-ceiling glass wall offers a stunning view of San Francisco Bay in the vast living room. Joseph introduces the contest winner, and arrangements are made to exchange clothes and residences. The following morning Hobson accepts a package addressed to Joseph and opens it in his master's absence. Hobson dies within minutes of examining the contents. Brooklyn and Derek witnessed the death as they stopped by to pick up items Brooklyn left at the residence the night before. Brooklyn immediately calls Inspector Lee, who comes to the crime scene right away. Brooklyn correctly identifies the murder weapon: the distinctive golden glow of poisoned paper.

But the biggest event is being run by Joseph’s newspaper: a citywide contest based on The Prince and The Pauper—they want to find someone who looks like Joseph!
