Review: DAISY DARKER is Alice Feeney's latest release, and if you've been wanting this book as much as I have, no fear. It was worth every second of the wait! Daisy Darker's family brings "dysfunctional" to a new level. There is no love lost between the family members, and when they get together to celebrate their family matriarch's 80th birthday, sparks fly.
Alice Feeney is the spider, and I'm the fly. I swear, as soon as I started this book, there was no putting it down; I was caught in its web. The atmosphere in Daisy Darker is truly unparalleled. From the very beginning, the tone was clear, and I could feel it throughout the entire book. From the waves crashing on the shore of Nana's home, Sealgass, to the foreboding of the tide coming in, it was spectacular. And the poem highlighted throughout the story was so spooky, especially with Stephanie Racine's narration. It ratcheted up the tension to another level. The way this story was told, from present-day to childhood memories, was so well done. Every memory felt essential, and I was glued to the edge of my seat to see how each one would play out. There were some fantastic twists here, and while I did guess a few of them, I wouldn't say this was predictable. I'd just say that I had 8000 theories and one or two of them were bound to play out.
The family dynamics here were stellar. There was so much tension from this broken (in more easily than one) family, and I ate it all up. Also, the way the story was told as a countdown to the tide once again going out… - chef's kiss -. I couldn't have asked for better storytelling! The only thing that could top this book would be seeing it come to life on screen.
I won't tell you anything more about DAISY DARKER, as this is a read I wouldn't want to spoil for anyone. Alice Feeney had her work cut out for herself if she was going to top Rock Paper Scissors. Amazingly enough, it was a challenge she met. I have just one question for this author - What's next? Narrator: I was so excited when I saw that Stephanie Racine was going to narrate another Alice Feeney book! At this point, the two are a pair for me. Stephanie takes Alice's words and encapsulates them perfectly. She was a perfect Daisy Darker, and I am always on the hunt for more of her narration. She's one of my absolute favorite narrators, and I can't wait to listen to more from her!
After years of avoiding each other, Daisy Darker’s entire family is assembling for Nana’s 80th birthday party in Nana’s crumbling gothic house on a tiny tidal island. Finally back together one last time, when the tide comes in, they will be cut off from the rest of the world for eight hours.
The family arrives, each of them harboring secrets. Then at the stroke of midnight, as a storm rages, Nana is found dead. And an hour later, the next family member follows…
Trapped on an island where someone is killing them one by one, the Darkers must reckon with their present mystery as well as their past secrets, before the tide comes in and all is revealed.
With a wicked wink to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, Daisy Darker’s unforgettable twists will leave readers reeling.
