Women's Fiction Contemporary

Tybee Island is once more the setting for a novel of family, and friends who might as well be family.  If you read the earlier two books in the 'Savannah Skies' series you will know everyone, but if not, the characters are so well described that you can read A GOOD MEASURE as a newcomer to this island off Georgia. Libby Tennyson's husband, Jack, passed away, and months later she is finally beginning to adapt.

The Tennyson family, who largely live elsewhere now, are planning to host Libby's son Gage's wedding on the farm. Barn weddings are popular. With this in mind, I thought the cover could have been more cheerful. The quiet barn scene reflects Libby's view, as she takes her sweet time making up her mind about spending Thursday evenings with old friends. The Guild of widows meets for drinks and chat and mutual support. A social outlet is really important, and Ames and Payton keep hoping Libby will join them.

Payton Childs runs a coffee shop that she opened recently, along with her grown son Cash, who is on the autism spectrum. Payton wants Cash to have training and independence when she can't be there anymore, but Cash quite reasonably resents micromanagement. Ames Finley, who is a very caring person, fusses over people and dogs. She was at her late husband's beck and call and is just recovering from his loss, as we meet her learning to use the smoothie maker she was gifted ages ago. Ames is now afraid to visit her daughter on the west coast. She's never flown. These mature ladies are of an age when health scares arise, and good advice is provided.

Chase is another one of Libby's sons, and the romance turns unconventional as he hopes to marry Liam Evans, his partner. Much family conversation revolves around acceptance of this situation, so the discussions and kindness in this faith-centered story may help some readers. Chase is perhaps the most compassionate person of all, extending care to strangers. He is a credit to his parents.

My favorite character is the energetic young Ellie, Libby's granddaughter, who loves nature and enjoys fascinating facts. I can't get enough of Ellie because she reminds me of myself at that age, so I'm glad she makes a friend with similar interests. The dramas are of the domestic variety, with author Nan Rossiter enjoying following her characters' lives. A GOOD MEASURE is open, warm, and confiding. Life is returning to normal, and it's good to see.

SUMMARY

Return to Tybee Island off the coast of Georgia in USA Today bestselling author Nan Rossiter’s third Savannah Skies novel, a heartwarming story about love, acceptance, finding your place in the world, and learning to carry on in the face of overwhelming loss.

It has been eight months since Libby Tennyson’s husband, Jack, passed away, and now every afternoon when the fiery sun sinks below the horizon, she finds herself wandering through the empty old farmhouse in which they raised their six sons. Melancholy hour, she calls it—the time of day that was once a flurry of dinner, homework, and chores, but with her sons grown and on their own, she grieves for all she has lost—and worries about what the future holds for her youngest son, twenty-eight-year-old Chase.

All the Tennyson boys are handsome—but there’s something about Chase that has always made women swoon. Growing up in the shadow of his older brothers, Chase was different—gentler, kinder, a boy with a big heart who looked after those most vulnerable. Though his family loves him deeply, Chase never felt he could truly be himself until he met Liam Evans, his partner in business and love. After six years, Chase and Liam are ready to make a lifetime commitment...yet both feel apprehensive including their very traditional families in their wedding planning.

But life is full of surprises, and Libby finds unexpected hope in her new stage of life when she connects with The Guild, a group of widows who get together every Thursday evening for wine, laughter, and companionship. Here, Libby not only discovers a safe space, but a place of honesty, and...growth. And while Chase and Libby may not see eye to eye every time, they can both always agree that love truly does win.

After all, a good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, is always poured back…because for all the measure you use, it will be measured to you!
