Audiobook narrated by Jorjeana Marie

As flight attendant Ava Green embarks on her last working flight in THE LAYOVER by Lacie Waldon, she can’t help but wonder if settling down and giving up her job is what she wants after all. Ava has a lot of heartache in her life; her parents were always too busy chasing adventures to give their daughter a stable life, and years ago, a relationship fell apart after a shocking discovery. And Ava can’t help but think that Jack Stone, her unknown-to-him archnemesis, is at the center of it. And to make matters worse, this fellow flight attendant is also assigned to her last flight.

In search of the stability her parents never gave her, Ava got engaged to a man who will give her just that. I will say that his character was very one-dimensional, and I think this was in an effort to make the reader warm up to Jack Stone. For me, this worked. I was never fully on board with Ava being engaged to him because I didn’t know him, and Jack was such a fun character that I couldn’t help but root for him throughout the story. When their flight ends up being delayed an extra day in Belize, Ava and Jack join forces to get their co-workers Gen and Pilot Paul to notice each other. But Ava doesn’t stop to think that this means she and Jack will be left to their own devices. And against her better judgment, Ava is starts to like Jack. And worse, she finds him attractive. The banter here was fantastic, and I couldn't get enough of it.

I don’t know a lot about Belize, but I do know that I enjoyed the descriptions of the area, and the events that Jack and Ava were part of seemed like a lot of fun. They were cute ways to get to know one another, and I loved all the time they were spending together. It’s interesting that she is sort of open on her last flight, as she’s always made it a rule for herself not to get to know them. After all, she’ll just be moving on.

The side characters often stole the show for me throughout THE LAYOVER. I especially loved Gen and "Pilot Paul." Gen was so outgoing and unapologetic; she is just the kind of charismatic person that would draw people to her. Paul was more reserved and sweet, and I enjoyed their side story. I also loved "the people on the boat" in Belize. The whole situation of how Gen and Jack really started letting their guards down was so much fun. And then there’s the enigma of Captain Ballinger. I really liked his character, and I love that the audience got a bigger glimpse into him than Ava herself did. It was fun to have a leg up on the main character in the book.

One of the things I discovered about myself as a reader while spending time with this book is that I am a much bigger fan of "Enemy to lovers" than I am of "Enemies to Lovers." It’s more fun for me when a grudge is one-sided or even unfounded. I love the main character realizing their mistake and what an ass they’ve been in certain situations. That revelation arc is just so much fun to read!

This was a book I picked up on a whim and thought I’d get to someday. But when I picked it up, I absolutely could not put it down. It was a complete surprise to me, and I loved every single word of the story! If you’re looking for a book to bring with you to the beach this summer, consider THE LAYOVER by Lacie Waldon!

Audiobook Narration: Jorjeana Marie did such a fantastic job with this book! I’ve heard this narrator's work before and loved it. It’s no surprise that I also loved it here. She captured the fun nature of the story and Ava’s disgust with Jack so well that it amped up an already enjoyable read. If you’ve never listened to her, I highly recommend you check out her backlist!

SUMMARY

An unexpected tropical layover with her nemesis turns a flight attendant's life upside down in this witty, breezy debut romantic comedy about life--and love--30,000 feet above the ground.

After ten years as a flight attendant, Ava Greene is poised to hang up her wings and finally put down roots. She's got one trip left before she bids her old life farewell, and she plans to enjoy every second of it. But then she discovers that former pilot Jack Stone--the absurdly gorgeous, ridiculously cocky man she's held a secret grudge against for years--is on her flight. And he has the nerve to flirt with her, as if he doesn't remember the role he played in the most humiliating night of her life. Good thing she never has to see him again after they land....

But when their plane encounters mechanical problems, what should have been a quick stop at the Belize airport suddenly becomes a weekend layover. Getting stuck on a three-hour flight with her nemesis was bad enough. Being stranded with him at a luxury resort in paradise? Even with the sultry breeze and white sand to distract her, it will take all the rum punch in the country to drown out his larger-than-life presence.

Yet the more time Ava spends with him under the hot Caribbean sun, the more she begins to second-guess everything she thought she knew about him...and everything she thought she wanted from her life. And all too soon, she might have to choose between keeping her feet on the ground and her head in the clouds....
