Mystery Private Eye | Mystery Cozy

Aleksandra Daniels is finally settling in in her cozy coastal town of Bellamy Bay, North Carolina. Being reunited with her aunt and cousins and working at the family-owned apothecary has filled a void in her life since losing her father and uprooting her life as a risk analyst. She is also starting to wrap her mind around being a water witch and finding out she comes from a long line of mermaid heritage. And what better way to celebrate that heritage other than the annual Mermaid Festival. Helping her friend, Celeste, plan and be involved in the festival for the first time is just the thing to buoy her spirits even further. Famous artist and researcher of mythology, Neve Ryland, has been in town to commemorate the event with a special mermaid mural. At an event honoring Neve, Celeste becomes increasingly annoyed with how close Neve is becoming with her boyfriend Jasper. When Neve is found dead in Jasper’s office, all fingers and evidence point straight to Celeste. Alex vows to help clear her friend’s name, much to the chagrin of her boyfriend, a law enforcement officer. As Alex digs deeper into Neve’s past, a lot of the members of the Bellamy Bay community seem to be tied to her, in ways no on could image. Can Alex find the killer, or will she be silenced for good?

Take a cozy mystery, add a splash of herbal remedies, a dash of mermaid, and a pinch of magic and you get this amazingly clever mystery series. A HEX FOR DANGER by Esme Addison is my absolute favorite paranormal cozy series. The characters in this series are perfection. Alex is a strong lead character, a woman who doesn’t back down and knows what she wants and goes after it. Alex’s aunt and cousins are the perfect blend of leader, whimsical, and grounded that every family has and needs. The supporting characters, from Alex’s boyfriend to childhood friend, Dylan, are all evolving at the perfect pace and add so much anticipation to the storyline. The plot of this novel is flawless. I thought I had it figured out and then the twists and turns came and I was on the edge of my seat until the murderer was caught. Wow, what an ending!

A HEX FOR DANGER is the second book in the Enchanted Bay Mystery series. This book can be read as a standalone, but I would suggest starting at book one, A SPELL FOR TROUBLE, to see where Alex’s journey began.

SUMMARY

The small town of Bellamy Bay has its share of skeletons in its closet, but it isn't used to bodies turning up in the local history museum. After all, this coastal North Carolina town is much like any other...except, of course, for the mermaids.

Helping to run the family business, an herbal apothecary while keeping her supernatural secret hidden is no easy feat for water witch Aleksandra Daniels.  But somehow she's still found time to help her friend Celeste, who has her own Caribbean mermaid heritage plan the annual Mermaid Festival. As fun-seekers throng the beaches, Alex gets to know and is intrigued by renowned artist Neve Ryland, who's in town to decorate the local park with a mermaid-themed mural. Celeste, however, is less enamored with the artist, as Neve has been spending entirely too much one-on-one time with her boyfriend Jasper, director of Bellamy Bay's history museum. Then, a reception for Neve ends abruptly when the artist is found dead in his office.

The police investigation nets Celeste who asks Alex to find the true culprit. With the help of her magically-inclined aunt and cousins, Alex dives in to clear her friend's name. But there was more to Neve Ryland than met the eye...and Alex fears she may be in way too deep. Will she catch the crook or be next on the hook?
