In UNDERCOVER KITTY, Charlotte’s Angels recruit Elvis to go undercover for their new case involving recent sabotage at cat shows. Elvis is Sarah’s small black cat with an “adorable head tilt and scarred nose” along with a ‘purrfect’ personality.
The Angels, led by Alfred Peterson, include Liz French, Charlotte Elliott, and Rose Jackson, all good friends. As Rose explains to Sarah, the damage seems to be vandalism, but the efforts are escalating. Mr. P and Rose want to enter Elvis in the Household Pet Category, giving them access to the show and investigating.
Rose, Mr. P, and Sarah meet other cats and cat owners at the first show as they get their bearings. Elvis seems to be a natural and earns second place in this first appearance. And Sarah meets a couple of new cats and their owners. Unfortunately, Christine, a friend of Debra, owner of Socrates, a high ranking purebred, is killed in the fire in her apartment. Sarah believes it is murder and begins identifying suspects immediately.
Between the suspects for Christine’s murder and those who might be behind the sabotage at the cat shows, Sarah and her friends keep busy following leads and poking around the second and larger cat show.
Ms. Ryan writes a well thought out mystery with twists and red herrings, often incorporating attractive new characters. But the author’s storytelling skills positively shine when describing Elvis and his interaction with the family of continuing characters in North Harbor, Maine. Her portrayal of Elvis and his transformation into a show cat is delightful. For instance, Sarah reads a banner at the cat show – “Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.” The response from Elvis, “Mrrr.” And when Elvis wins his category, his answer to the question from a cat food sponsor for his contact information: “Mrrr, Elvis said with a fair amount of enthusiasm.”
In UNDERCOVER KITTY cat whisperer, Sarah Grayson, and her feline Elvis lead readers on an entertaining adventure that discerning cozy fans will absolutely enjoy.
