Samara Grant drives with her wildly annoying brother Jamari to the town of Lutton, Texas. They used to visit family here as kids, but Samara’s been busy getting an education and work, travelling the world. Sadly, her Grandma Bunny has died, and Samara has come to help her mom decide what to do with the old B&B. CHASING WILD HORSES, a lively modern romance read, interestingly contrasts two periods of life in America, the 1960s and 2005, as Sam finds her grandmother’s journal.
Chase Collins is one of two relatives who don’t see eye to eye very often. They both agree that smart, citified Sam is out of her element, but highly desirable. The men live on the family spread at Wild Horse Ranch, and Chase makes an impact on Sam that he didn’t intend when an innocent girls’ night out with a pal ends badly. But Chase isn’t the sociable one in the family. That’s Reed Ward. And Reed, who doubles as the local bartender, is far better at flattery and invitation. The two cowboys descend into a tug of war over the newcomer.
Now if, like me, you picked this book in the ‘Wild Horse Ranch’ series for the horses, you’ll be waiting until a quarter way through for the promise to be fulfilled. But then the horses are regular features as ranch mounts. Sam bravely decides she wants to learn about horses and sticks it out through the added work of learning horse care, which I really enjoyed. She starts to become a different person, on top of the smart and independent woman she already was. Something else she’s learning about, is the relationship her equally brave and feisty granny had with a man who, in the 1960s, was not an ideal choice for her beau. Could this end well? Sam is writing her own life’s story, of course, but the reader gets caught up in the story from the past.
This multicultural romance, with an added dash of suspense, is a great book for adult readers who want to understand change and choice, and how they affect not just one life, but generations. Mila Nicks has written other romances involving strong African-American heroines, and a follow-up to CHASING WILD HORSES called Taming Wild Horses is already available. Sounds like a must-read.
A slow-burn romance between two outsiders from opposite worlds:
He’s the biggest outcast in town…
Chase Collins has never met a horse he didn’t like. Too bad he can’t say the same for people. In his hometown Lutton, his poor reputation follows him like a dark shadow. It’s best for everyone if he sticks to where he belongs. At least on Wild Horse Ranch, he’s safe from judgment. Then one day a familiar face from 10 years ago shows up out of the blue.
She’s a wanderer who comes and goes…
Samara Grant is a nomad at heart. She doesn’t like staying put for too long. But when her Grandma Bunny passes away, she has to put her carefree lifestyle on hold to handle her affairs. She might have spent childhood summers in Lutton, Texas, but it’s no place to live. She wants to get in and out as fast as possible. Little does she know life has other plans.
Together, they form an unbreakable bond…
When Samara feels like she's losing control of her life, she decides to take it back. She asks Chase to teach her how to ride. Neither expect to find common ground—and a fiery attraction—when Chase agrees. But their blossoming relationship isn’t celebrated by everyone. The closer Chase and Samara get, the more an unforeseen enemy seeks to tear them apart
