Thriller Domestic

The New Husband is the story of Nina Garrity and her family, still reeling after the sudden disappearance of her husband, and then the addition of Simon Fitch to their dynamic. Not only is Nina reeling from the loss of her husband, but the lies and deception he left in his wake. And her daughter, whose point of view we also get, is struggling with her loyalty to her father and the new man in her mother’s life.

In an effort to protect the memory of their father, Nina hasn’t shared the truth that’s come out since her husband’s disappearance. This is making it incredibly hard for her daughter, as her mother’s new relationship feels like a betrayal. Much of this story is told as Nina confides in her therapist, and I really enjoyed this avenue of storytelling. Her history with her husband is relayed to us this way, as well as her new relationship with Simon, how he gets along so well with her son, but how her daughter’s reaction to him is putting a huge strain on the family as they navigate their ‘new normal.’

I really enjoyed this story so much! It wasn’t always edge of your seat, but it was always interesting, and while I liked it from the very beginning, something happened almost halfway through that made it so I could not put this book down. It really was a look into the mind of a psychopath, and just like a train wreck, I couldn’t look away! There were so many shocking moments, and I loved them all. At times, my heart was racing, and I swear I was chanting ‘no, no no!’ I just didn’t want what I thought was going to happen to actually happen to these characters that had already been through so much.

If you remember the movie with Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon called FEAR, that’s the kind of vibe this book gave me. It wasn’t a carbon copy of the plot, but it was that unbelievable ‘there’s just no way this can be happening to this family right now’ feeling. Overall, I found The New Husband to be a gripping and interesting ride, and if you enjoy a good domestic Mystery/Thriller, I think you will, too!

SUMMARY

What makes Simon Fitch so perfect?

  • He knows all her favorite foods, music, and movies.
  • Her son adores him. He was there when she needed him most.
  • He anticipates her every need.
  • He would never betray her like her first husband.

The perfect husband. He checks all the boxes.

The question is, why?

Nina Garrity learned the hard way that her missing husband, Glen, had been leading a double life with another woman. But with Glen gone--presumably drowned while fishing on his boat--she couldn't confront him about the affair or find closure to the life he blew apart.

Now, a year and a half later, Nina has found love again and hopes she can put her shattered world back together. Simon, a widower still grieving the death of his first wife, thinks he has found his dream girl in Nina, and his charm and affections help break through to a heart hardened by betrayal. Nina's teenage son, Connor, embraces Simon as the father he wishes his dad could have been, while her friends see a different side to him, and they aren't afraid to use the word obsession.

Nina works hard to bridge the divide that’s come between her daughter and Simon. She wants so badly to believe her life is finally getting back on track, but she’ll soon discover that the greatest danger to herself and her children are the lies people tell themselves.
