I'd already read the next in the Daring Heights series, so it was a pleasure to go back and read the first. Canadian born author Madelon Smid sets some of her scenes in Canada -- I didn't know they had such a paparazzi problem in Toronto -- and some in Europe, where the majestic glacier- clad Alps lure intrepid climbers.
CLIMBING HIGH is a good reminder of high society, and we know that pride goes before a fall. Our heroine Desiree McConnell meets Jake Ingles as they prepare for a mixed ability climb in the Alps, and he joins the group hoping to see more of the interesting, athletic young woman. Siree as she is known, is pretty shy of publicity however, and Jake has made his money by hands-on running a technology firm. There is no chance she'll take his arm in public. But the pair save each other in turn during the exciting, scenic tale, whether from a steep drop or the specter of bankruptcy.
Siree is a forensic accountant, which means she specializes in investigating accounts which are potentially targeted by an embezzler or hacker. If she finds the money Jake is sure someone is draining from his bank accounts and books, he'll owe her more than just a fee. But the lady may live to regret agreeing to help Jake, because someone unknown is stalking him -- and that's in addition to the hassle of the full glare of publicity for any woman in his orbit.
Mainly I am impressed by the depth of research on climbing which has gone into this account. I found myself reading it and thinking, they must be mad. The climbers train on climbing walls in between mountain challenges, which is entirely realistic, and Madelon Smid neither glorifies female climbers nor makes them look weak. Each individual has strengths and nerve allied with experience and every trip is different.
This is an adult romance with a good depth of character revealed, and plenty of suspense. In CLIMBING HIGH the author has created a classic hero and heroine for our times. The dramatic series continues with HIGH GROUND, and third is HIGH SEAS. Anyone who enjoys outdoor adventure will love them.
